Chapter 4 - The Front Row Crumples

The crowd’s murmur surged into an uncontrollable roar. Across the cathedral, guests were rising from their seats, waving frantically at reporters, pulling their coats tightly around their shoulders as they realized the magnitude of the scandal breaking around them. This was no longer an awkward society dispute; this was the public decapitation of one of the most powerful dynasties in the northeastern United States.
Victoria Blackwood’s knees gave out. She collapsed heavily back onto the cushioned pew, her chest heaving as she stared at the federal agents securing her only son. ""You... you devious, ungrateful little monster,"" she rasped, her manicured fingers clawing at the wooden backrest in front of her. ""We took you in! We gave you an apartment on Park Avenue! We gave you access to the finest circles in the world! You would have been nothing without us!""
""You didn't take me in, Victoria. You trapped me in a gilded cage because you thought my silence was guaranteed once the ring was on my finger,"" I replied, feeling an immense, cool weight lift from my shoulders. ""You believed that money and legacy excused savagery. You believed that because your family’s name was carved into the cornerstone of university libraries and hospital wings, the laws of basic human decency didn't apply to you.""
Two female federal agents in plainclothes walked down the aisle, stopping directly in front of the front pew. One of them produced a thick, blue-stamped envelope and held it out toward Victoria.
""Victoria Blackwood?"" the agent asked in a flat, dispassionate tone.
Victoria shrank back, pressing herself flat against the pew. ""Don't you dare come near me. Do you know who my family is? My great-grandfather helped build this city!""
""Your great-grandfather isn't on the signature card of the Cayman accounts, Mrs. Blackwood,"" the agent replied coldly. ""You are. Under an order signed by Magistrate Judge Miller two hours ago, all personal and commercial assets belonging to you and Nathaniel Blackwood have been placed under federal receivership. We have an active warrant for your arrest on twelve counts of conspiracy to commit securities fraud, tax evasion, and witness tampering.""
Victoria’s mouth dropped open. The arrogance that had sustained her for sixty years evaporated in an instant, replaced by a hollow, terrifying vacancy. Her face turned ash-gray. Her hand shook so violently that she couldn't even push away the agent’s hand as they gently, but firmly, gripped her wrists and brought them behind her back.
""Elena, please!"" Nathaniel sobbed from the floor, his bravado entirely shattered. He was weeping openly now, the tears streaking the dust and perspiration across his aristocratic face. ""Think about what we built! We loved each other! We can fix this! I’ll get therapy! I’ll give you whatever you want—half the company, the penthouse, anything! Just tell them this was a misunderstanding!""

I looked down at him, feeling no rage, no pity, and no sorrow. Only the absolute, icy clarity of justice long overdue.
""You gave me everything I wanted the moment you signed that registry document twenty minutes ago, Nathaniel,"" I said, leaning down so only he could hear my final words. ""Because twenty minutes ago, in the eyes of New York state law, we were legally pronounced husband and wife.""
