Chapter 3 - Blood Money and Broken Ribs

The heavy wooden doors at the back of St. Andrew’s slammed open, sending a booming echo through the cavernous nave. Four more uniformed federal agents entered, their heavy boots thudding in synchronized rhythm against the runner carpet. Nathaniel swung around, frantically scanning the crowd for friendly faces, but every politician, every judge, and every fellow billionaire who had toasted him thirty minutes earlier suddenly looked down at the floor, desperate to avoid making eye contact.

""Look at this, everyone,"" I announced, turning the page to reveal a high-contrast forensic reconstruction of Blackwood Development’s primary ledger. ""Look at the numbers your golden boy tried so desperately to hide.""

I held up three distinct banking receipts printed on heavy cardstock. ""Exhibit C: an unauthorized transfer of twelve million dollars routed through a fictitious shell corporation titled 'Vanguard Meridian.' Signed by Nathaniel Blackwood. Exhibit D: eighteen falsified structural integrity reports for the Midtown Blackwood Tower, hiding defective steel framing to pocket twenty million dollars in municipal safety margins. Signed by Nathaniel Blackwood. And Exhibit E: the exact ledger proving that when Nathaniel slammed me against our kitchen counter on Tuesday night, it wasn't because of an argument over dinner. It was because he realized five hundred thousand dollars had been frozen in an escrow account he couldn't touch.""

Nathaniel lunged at me, completely unhinged, abandoning whatever remaining scrap of dignity he possessed. ""Shut your mouth! Shut up!""

He never reached me.

Special Agent Marcus Vance, the man who had shown his badge in the aisle, vaulted the chancel steps in two fluid strides. Before Nathaniel could lay a single finger on my bare shoulder, Vance caught his right arm, twisted it behind his back with military precision, and drove the groom face-first down onto the pristine white silk of my discarded wedding dress.

A chorus of screams went up from the bridesmaids dressed in blush pink. Nathaniel groaned in agony as his cheek was pressed into the stone floor, his $15,000 Italian tuxedo jacket ripping at the shoulder seam under the agent's heavy knee.

""Nathaniel Blackwood, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, corporate racketeering, and felony aggravated assault,"" Agent Vance recited smoothly, his voice flat and authoritative as the cold metallic click of handcuffs echoed off the stained-glass windows.

""Mom! Do something! Call the governor! Call Harrison!"" Nathaniel screamed, struggling against the floor, spitting saliva and silk fibers from his lips. ""She’s lying! She forged everything! I didn't touch her! She hurt herself to frame me!""

""The security cameras in our penthouse kitchen say otherwise, Nathaniel,"" I said quietly, taking two deliberate steps until I was looking straight down into his panicked, red-rimmed eyes. ""You installed those high-definition surveillance lenses to monitor my every move. You wanted to make sure I never spoke to delivery drivers, never left the apartment without your permission, and never stepped out of line. You forgot that every single frame was cloud-synced to an encrypted offsite server. The Department of Justice has seventy-two hours of footage showing you systematically assaulting me while your mother sat on the phone, advising you to keep the marks below my neckline so they wouldn't ruin the wedding photographs.""
