Chapter 8 - The Showdown at Blackwater Docks

The final confrontation did not happen in Queens.
As Elara's authentication token began draining Salvatore's offshore accounts by the millions, panic sent the rogue boss fleeing his fortified warehouse. Desperate, paranoid, and realizing his extraction had been cut off, Salvatore made a fatal blunder: he fled north toward the Canadian border, attempting to retrieve millions in emergency cash stashed in an old hunting lodge near Blackwater Lake.
He returned to the very waters where he had tried to drown Leandro Moretti.
By 11:00 PM, a dense fog hung over the lake shore. Rain began to fall again, mimicking the night of the crash. Four black Escalades blocked the mountain access road, while Leandro’s men moved silently through the dark pine trees, encircling the abandoned marina where Salvatore and his five remaining bodyguards were attempting to fuel a high-speed speedboat.
Floodlights suddenly flared to life from the tree line, pinning the fugitives in blinding white beams.
""Drop your weapons!"" Vincent's voice echoed through a megaphone.
Panicked gunfire erupted. Salvatore’s men fired blindly into the dark woods, but Leandro’s tactical team returned fire with surgical precision. Within forty seconds, three guards were neutralized, and the other two threw their rifles into the mud, falling to their knees with their hands raised.
Salvatore Greco stood alone on the slippery wooden dock, clutching a leather briefcase to his chest. He was a heavy-set man in his fifties, his expensive trench coat soaked and spattered with mud, his gray hair plastered against his sweating face.
From the shadows of the pine trees, Leandro stepped onto the dock. His black coat billowed in the wind, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the wooden planks. Behind him walked Elara, protected by Vincent and two armed sentries.
Salvatore stumbled backward, nearly falling into the churning black water. His eyes bugged out in disbelief as he stared at Leandro.
""You're dead..."" Salvatore choked out, his voice shrill. ""The plane... I saw the telemetry! You went down in two hundred feet of water!""
""I survived, Salvatore,"" Leandro said, his voice ringing out over the sound of the waves. ""Because unlike you, I have people who believe in honor. You tried to drown me in this lake. Instead, you drowned your own future.""
Salvatore looked wildly around, his gaze finally landing on Elara standing behind Leandro. Recognition dawned on his terrified face. ""The girl from the cabin... the baker.""
""Miss Vance,"" Leandro corrected him sharply, stopping two feet away. ""The woman whose family you ruined. The woman who just transferred two hundred million dollars of your laundered revenue into humanitarian trusts and local small-business relief funds.""
Salvatore’s face drained of color. He dropped the briefcase into the mud. ""Leandro... please. The commission... we can make a deal. I'll leave the country. You'll never see me again.""
""You are leaving,"" Leandro said coldly, turning his back on the broken man. ""To a federal penitentiary in Colorado. The evidence of your treason and financial fraud was delivered to the United States Attorney thirty minutes ago. You will spend the rest of your pathetic life in a concrete box, wondering how a humble baker took down a kingpin.""
Vincent stepped forward with two federal marshals who had accompanied the convoy under high-level jurisdiction, clamping heavy steel cuffs around Salvatore’s wrists and dragging him away into the rainy night.
Leandro turned back to Elara. The rain dripped from his dark hair, just as it had on the night she saved him.

""It's over,"" he said softly.
Elara looked past him at the dark, churning lake where a nightmare had begun. For the first time in years, the crushing weight in her chest was completely gone.
