Chapter 10 - Sweet Beginnings

One year later.

The summer evening was warm and fragrant, carrying the scent of pine needles and wild honeysuckle over the glassy surface of Blackwater Lake.

On the shore where Elara's rotting wooden dock had once stood, an elegant cedar boathouse and sprawling stone terrace now overlooked the water. A sleek, handcrafted mahogany lake boat bobbed gently in the sheltered slip.

On the lawn beside the restored A-frame cabin, fairy lights hung between the tall birch trees, casting a golden glow over sixty guests laughing and celebrating under the open sky.

Vincent, looking impeccably dapper in a light summer linen suit, stood near the outdoor barbecue, happily chatting with the local mayor and several Hudson Falls shop owners. The dark shadows of crime and violence had completely evaporated, replaced by genuine laughter and community warmth.

Inside the cabin's open kitchen, Elara added the finishing touch to a five-tier wedding cake decorated with spun sugar roses and edible gold leaf—a masterpiece she had baked with her own hands.

Two strong, warm arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind. Leandro rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and sweet cream that seemed permanently woven into her skin.

""The guests are demanding the bride come outside,"" Leandro murmured, kissing the side of her neck.

Elara smiled, leaning back against his chest. Her left hand rested over his, and the brilliant emerald-cut diamond ring on her finger caught the kitchen light.

""The bride is making sure the cake doesn't melt in the summer heat,"" she replied playfully, turning in his embrace to face him.

Leandro looked down at her with unfiltered adoration. Over the past year, the harsh lines of cruelty and stress that had once etched his face had softened into quiet confidence and deep peace. Under his guidance, the Moretti family had completely divested from illegal operations, transforming into one of the country's most respected maritime logistics and philanthropic enterprises.

And Vance & Moretti Bakery had opened three new locations across the state, training underprivileged youth in culinary arts and small-business management.

""You look breathtaking, Elara Moretti,"" he whispered.

""I like the sound of that,"" she sighed happily, wrapping her arms around his neck. ""Elara Moretti.""

Leandro took her hand and led her out onto the terrace. The crowd erupted into warm applause and cheers. Glasses of champagne clinked together in joyous toasts, celebrating two people from opposite ends of the universe who had collided in a storm and created something beautiful from the wreckage.

As the sun dipped behind the Adirondack mountains, painting the lake in brilliant shades of gold, amber, and deep crimson, Leandro pulled Elara close on the edge of the stone dock.

Music drifted from the speakers—a soft, romantic acoustic melody that echoed across the calm water. They swayed together in the gentle evening breeze, safe, whole, and completely unstoppable.

""Do you remember what you told me that night?"" Leandro asked softly, his dark eyes shining with love. ""When the water was up to my chin and I told you my leg was stuck?""

Elara smiled, her heart overflowing with warmth. ""I told you: I don't care. Pull. You are not dying on my watch.""

Leandro pressed his forehead against hers, his lips brushing against her smile.

""You saved my life that night, Elara,"" he whispered as the stars began to appear in the velvet sky above Blackwater Lake. ""And every day since, you've shown me how to truly live it."""
