Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Shadows

The following morning brought an eerie calm to the Long Island compound. The storm had washed the sky clean, leaving it a brilliant, cloudless blue. Yet beneath the bright sunshine, the mansion hummed with nervous tension. Guards checked their ammunition clips in the courtyard, convoy engines idled quietly in the underground garages, and Vincent barely looked up from his secure communications array.

Leandro insisted Elara join him for breakfast in the sunlit glass conservatory overlooking the manicured grounds. Despite the lavish spread of fresh croissants, fruit, and smoked meats, Elara could barely stomach a sip of orange juice.

""You look tired,"" Leandro noted, cutting his steak with clinical precision.

""It’s hard to sleep when you’re waiting for a war to erupt,"" Elara replied, leaning her chin on her hand. ""What happens when you confront this man, Salvatore?""

""Justice,"" Leandro said simply. ""Or what passes for it in my world.""

""You speak as though violence solves everything.""

""Violence solves nothing, Elara,"" Leandro countered, setting his fork down and looking straight at her. ""Absolute leverage solves everything. Violence is merely the blunt instrument used when diplomacy fails. Salvatore violated the cardinal rule of our commission: he targeted an unarmed flight and endangered innocent civilians. His own allies will abandon him when they see the evidence of his treason.""

Before Elara could reply, Vincent entered the conservatory, his face unusually pale. He leaned down and whispered something into Leandro’s ear.

Elara watched Leandro’s expression darken. The warmth that had briefly touched his eyes vanished, replaced by an aura of utter lethality that made the hair on her arms stand up.

""Are you certain?"" Leandro asked quietly.

""Positive, sir,"" Vincent replied. ""The digital trace came from an internal terminal on the secondary floor. Someone transmitted our perimeter security codes and private communications frequencies forty minutes ago.""

There was a traitor inside the fortress.

Leandro stood up slowly, adjusting the cuffs of his dark navy suit. ""Seal the compound. Lock down all exits, scramble the cell towers within a five-mile radius, and gather all senior captains in the courtyard.""

""Right away, Don Leandro."" Vincent hurried away.

Elara stood up instinctively, her instinct screaming that danger was closing in. ""Leandro, what’s going on?""

""The house is compromised,"" Leandro said, his voice flat and controlled. He reached beneath his jacket, drew a sleek black 9mm pistol from his shoulder holster, and held it out toward her, handle first. ""Take this.""

Elara took a step back, her hands raised. ""No. I’ve never fired a gun in my life. I can't.""

""You smashed an aircraft canopy with an anchor to pull a stranger from the deep,"" Leandro insisted, taking her right hand and pressing the cold, heavy metal of the firearm into her palm. He wrapped her fingers around the grip. ""You are stronger than you think, Elara. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot. If anyone opens the door to my private study who is not me or Vincent, you pull the trigger. Do you understand me?""

Her breath came in short, panicked gasps, but the fierce conviction in his eyes anchored her. She nodded slowly. ""I understand.""

He escorted her swiftly down the corridor and into his secure study, closing the heavy reinforced steel door behind her. ""Wait here. Do not make a sound.""

The electronic bolt clicked shut, leaving Elara in the dim, silent room, gripping the weapon with both hands. Minutes dragged by like hours. She could hear distant thuds, the muffled shouts of men shouting orders, and the unmistakable sound of heavy vehicles speeding across gravel.

Suddenly, the power cut.

The recessed ceiling lights died, plunging the study into darkness. Emergency backup lights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, eerie shadows across the bookshelves.

Then, from the ventilation shaft above the desk, came the faint sound of metal scraping against metal.

Someone was not coming through the door. They were already inside the walls.
