Chapter 4 - The Debtor's Ledger

The master guest suite was larger than Elara's entire A-frame cabin. It featured a plush king-sized bed draped in Egyptian silk, a private balcony overlooking a private rose garden, and a marble bathroom stocked with luxury French cosmetics. On the vanity table lay four boxes from high-end Manhattan boutiques containing tailored dresses, soft cashmere sweaters, and Italian leather shoes—all bought in her exact size within hours of her arrival.
Yet Elara could not relax. The absolute silence of the estate was unnatural. Every time she stepped near the balcony, she spotted armed sentries patrolling the perimeter below.
By late evening, unable to bear the confinement any longer, Elara slipped out of the suite. The second-floor gallery was quiet, illuminated by soft wall sconces. She wandered toward the grand staircase, drawn by the distant murmur of voices coming from the lower level.
She followed the sound down a carpeted hallway toward a set of heavy mahogany double doors that stood slightly ajar. Warm amber light spilled onto the floorboards.
""Apex Lending is a shell corporation,"" Vincent's crisp voice echoed from inside the room. ""Owned by an offshore holding company registered in Cyprus. But we traced the primary beneficiary accounts this afternoon.""
Elara stopped in her tracks, pressing herself against the wall near the door frame.
""And?"" Leandro’s deep voice responded, thick with cold fury.
""The paper trail leads straight back to Salvatore Greco,"" Vincent revealed. ""He has been buying up distressed properties across upstate New York through third-party liquidators for two years, laundering his extortion revenue through foreclosed commercial mortgages. Miss Vance’s bakery was one of sixty-four local properties targeted for rapid foreclosure.""
Elara gasped silently, pressing a trembling hand over her mouth.
Apex Lending had refused every repayment plan she proposed. They had inflated interest rates overnight, sent aggressive collection agents to smash her shop windows, and rejected her bank refinancing without explanation. She had blamed herself for failing her father's legacy. She had cried herself to sleep for months thinking she was simply a terrible businesswoman.
It had all been engineered. Her life had been destroyed as collateral damage in a mobster's money-laundering scheme.
""Salvatore took down my plane,"" Leandro said, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper, ""and he drove the woman who saved me into bankruptcy. The man has run out of time.""
""What do you want us to do with Apex Lending, boss?"" Vincent asked.
""Buy out the parent corporation by midnight,"" Leandro commanded ruthlessly. ""Liquidate the directors. Foreclose on every asset Salvatore holds under that entity. And the bakery in Hudson Falls... transfer the deed and all surrounding commercial lots directly into Elara Vance’s name. Clear all debts. Allocate two million dollars in operational capital into an independent trust under her control.""
""Consider it done.""
Elara stepped back from the door, her heart hammering against her ribs. Overwhelmed by shock and a sudden rush of complex emotions, she accidentally bumped her shoulder against a bronze pedestal holding a marble bust.
The pedestal wobbled, scraping against the wood.
""Who is there?"" Leandro’s voice barked instantly.
Elara knew there was no point in running. Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the doorway of the sprawling private library. Floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls, and behind a massive walnut desk sat Leandro. His forehead was neatly stitched, his arm resting on the polished wood. Vincent stood nearby, holding a thick black ledger.
""I didn't mean to eavesdrop,"" Elara said, her voice shaking slightly but holding firm. ""I was looking for some water.""
Leandro waved Vincent out of the room with a subtle flick of his fingers. Vincent nodded respectfully to Elara as he exited, pulling the heavy mahogany doors shut behind him.
""How much did you hear?"" Leandro asked calmly, standing up from his desk.
""Enough to know that the man who tried to kill you is the reason I lost my bakery,"" she said, stepping further into the room. Tears of anger welled in her eyes. ""My father died of a heart attack trying to keep up with those extortionate loan payments, Leandro! He worked eighty hours a week dusting flour and baking bread for our neighbors, while some monster in a suit was playing games with our lives!""
Leandro walked around the desk, stopping just inches in front of her. His sheer physical presence was commanding, yet his gaze was unexpectedly tender.
""Your father was an honorable man,"" Leandro said softly, lifting a hand to gently wipe away a tear rolling down her cheek. ""Men like him are the backbone of this world. Men like Salvatore are parasites who take what they cannot build.""
May you like
""And what are you, Leandro?"" she whispered, looking up into his intense dark eyes. ""Are you a builder or a parasite?""
Leandro did not flinch. ""I am the knife that cuts the parasites out of the flesh. Tomorrow, Salvatore pays for what he did to Marco, to my men, and to you.""
