Chapter 9 - The Grand Opening

One year later, the spring sunshine beat down warmly on the blooming cherry blossoms along Madison Avenue.
A crowd of two hundred high-society patrons, art critics, and international jewelry collectors gathered outside the magnificent two-story brick boutique.
The polished brass sign above the arched glass windows read: Iris Dunn Atelier.
Inside, velvet display cases showcased my bespoke creations: intricate platinum necklaces, hand-carved sapphire rings, and delicate gold cuffs that celebrated feminine curves and timeless beauty.
Mrs. Ashford stood near the front display, proudly wearing the famous diamond necklace, regaling a group of European curators with the story of the gallery night.
I stood on the mezzanine balcony overlooking the bustling showroom, wearing a breathtaking bespoke emerald silk wrap dress that hugged my figure perfectly.
My hair was swept up in soft, romantic curls, and my eyes shone with the radiant confidence of a woman who had conquered her dreams on her own terms.
The business was an unprecedented success; my commissions were booked eighteen months in advance, and my designs had been featured on the cover of Vogue.
I had paid back the insurance recovery grant within six months, insisting on paying fair commercial rent for the building every single month.
I was an independent artist, but my heart belonged entirely to the king who guarded my peace.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind.
Rafe pulled me back against his broad chest, resting his chin comfortably on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of my wild jasmine perfume.
He wore a tailored charcoal suit—his tie perfectly centered—looking like the most magnificent, powerful man in the world.
"How does it feel, Madam Atelier?" Rafe whispered into my ear, his deep voice sending shivers of warmth down my spine.
"It feels like a dream I never want to wake up from, Rafe," I smiled, turning in his embrace and resting my hands against his lapels.
"It's not a dream, Iris," he replied softly, his dark eyes glowing with boundless love.
"You built every single piece of this with your brilliant talent and your unshakeable courage."
"I just stood by the door."
"You did a lot more than stand by the door, Rafael Rossi," I laughed softly, tracing the line of his cheekbone.
"You taught me that I was worthy of being loved, protected, and cherished."
Rafe reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a small velvet jeweler's box carved from black Italian walnut.
He opened it to reveal a magnificent, raw-cut Colombian emerald embraced by two rows of hand-set pavé diamonds, set in a custom platinum band.
It was an exquisite, one-of-a-kind ring, forged with the unmistakable precision of an ancient Florentine master.
"Rafe..." I breathed, tears welling up in my eyes.
"For twelve months, you've forged treasures for the entire world, Iris," Rafe said, his voice trembling with deep, vulnerable emotion.
"I had this stone cut by my family's master jeweler in Sicily."
"An emerald represents eternal rebirth, unyielding loyalty, and the fire that survives the dark."
He looked into my eyes, dropping to one knee right there on the private balcony overlooking our showroom.
"One year ago, you mistook me for a four-hundred-dollar bodyguard."
"It was the greatest promotion of my life."
"I don't want to just be your protector, Iris."
"I want to be your husband. Your partner. Your home."
"Will you marry me, Iris Dunn?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my cheeks, catching the golden afternoon light streaming through the arched windows.
There was no hesitation.
There were no doubts.
"Yes, Rafe," I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck.
"A thousand times, yes!"

Rafe lifted me into his arms, spinning me around on the mezzanine terrace before kissing me with a fierce, breathless passion that sealed our souls together forever.
Down below in the showroom, Mrs. Ashford looked up, raised her champagne glass toward the balcony, and led the entire room in a thunderous, standing ovation.
