Chapter 6 - The Penthouse Sanctuary

Twenty minutes later, an armored black Maybach delivered us to the private garage of a luxury residential tower in Tribeca.

A private biometric elevator carried Rafe and me directly into a vast, two-story penthouse overlooking the glittering Hudson River.

Floor-to-ceiling glass framed the Manhattan skyline, while a roaring gas fireplace warmed the open-concept living room.

The space was furnished with dark minimalist Italian leather, antique bookshelves, and priceless modern sculptures.

It looked less like a mobster's fortress and more like the sanctuary of a cultured, solitary prince.

"Make yourself comfortable, Iris," Rafe said, shrugging off his suit jacket and draping it over the back of a leather sofa.

He unbuttoned his collar and rolled up his white shirt sleeves, revealing the intricate, dark ink of archangels wrapping around his forearms.

I stood in the center of the plush Persian rug, still clutching my small evening clutch, feeling completely out of place in my dark velvet gown.

"You live here alone?" I asked, looking around the cavernous space.

"Solitude is an occupational hazard of my position," Rafe replied with a faint, self-deprecating smile.

He walked into the open kitchen and returned carrying two ceramic mugs of hot chamomile tea with honey.

He handed one to me, his warm fingers brushing against mine, sending that familiar, dangerous electric current through my veins.

"Sit, please," he said gently, nodding toward the sofa. "Your feet must be aching after five hours in those heels."

I hesitated for a second, then sat down, letting out a soft sigh as I kicked off my navy stilettos.

The tea was warm, fragrant, and soothing, helping to calm the violent adrenaline that had been hammering against my ribs since the blackout.

Rafe sat on the opposite end of the sofa, leaning back and resting his arm along the leather cushions, watching me with quiet intensity.

"You're very quiet for a woman who just watched two criminals dismantled in a basement," Rafe remarked softly.

"I’m trying to figure out why a man who commands an empire spent four hours holding my purse and straightening his tie for me," I answered, looking directly into his dark eyes.

Rafe looked down at his mug, swirling the amber liquid for a long, quiet moment.

"My life is surrounded by people who want something from me, Iris," he confessed, his voice dropping into a low, resonant cadence.

"They want my money, they want my protection, or they want my blood."

"Every conversation is a negotiation. Every handshake is an assessment of leverage."

"When you walked up to me in that lobby, you didn't know who I was."

"You didn't care about my family name."

"You were just a brilliant, fiercely independent artist who needed an honest partner to get through a difficult room."

"And when you straightened my tie..."

He paused, looking up, his gaze holding mine with a raw, breathtaking vulnerability that made my heart hammer against my chest.

"Nobody has touched me with genuine kindness in fifteen years, Iris."

Tears pricked the corners of my eyes as I listened to the quiet sorrow beneath his iron exterior.

I had spent two years with Preston, being judged, belittled, and told that my body was too soft and my ambitions were too small.

Yet here was the most powerful man in New York, looking at me as if I were the rarest gem he had ever encountered.

"I'm just a jeweler from Queens, Rafe," I whispered softly.

"No, Iris," Rafe replied, setting his mug on the coffee table and sliding closer until only inches separated us.

"You are a master of fire and metal."

"And tonight, you forged a hold over me that I have zero desire to break."
