Chapter 4 - The King in the Shadows

The beam of the tactical flashlight illuminated Rafe’s face, casting sharp, dramatic shadows across his high cheekbones.
The four armed men in tactical gear formed an impenetrable protective ring around us, completely ignoring the screaming socialites fleeing through the side doors.
I stepped backward, my heels clacking against the wet marble, pulling myself out of his embrace.
My breath hitched in my throat as my mind frantically replayed the entire evening.
“Are you my security?”
“Yes.”
“You look expensive. That should help.”
I had straightened the tie of the most feared underworld kingpin on the Eastern Seaboard and ordered him to carry my coat.
"You're not from Sentinel Security," I whispered, pressing my trembling fingers against my collarbone.
Rafe let out a quiet, rueful breath, running a hand through his dark hair.
"Sentinel is a private subsidiary owned by one of my holding companies, Iris," Rafe explained, taking a slow step toward me.
"Their assigned operative called in sick two hours before the event."
"When the dispatch flag hit my private terminal, I noticed Preston Vance was listed as a guest of honor."
"I have been tracking Vance's illicit fencing network for six months."
"So you came to the gallery yourself?" I asked, my voice rising in disbelief.
"I came to observe Vance's drop team," Rafe replied, his dark eyes never leaving my face.
"Then a breathtaking woman with curves like a renaissance painting walked up to me, fixed my tie, and asked me to protect her necklace."
"Why didn't you tell me the truth?!" I demanded, half-furious and half-terrified.
"Because for the first time in ten years, someone looked at me without fear in their eyes," he answered softly, his voice dropping into an honest, unvarnished cadence.
"You treated me like a man, Iris. Not a syndicate boss. Not a monster."
"And when I looked at the way those predators were circling you, I realized there was no force on earth that would make me leave your side tonight."
The heavy emergency power switches finally engaged in the basement.
The auxiliary floodlights overhead hummed to life, bathing the ruined ballroom in bright, stark white light.
The gallery patrons were huddled near the main exits, whispering in stunned awe as they realized who was standing in the center of the hall.
Across the room, two of Rafe's tactical operators dragged Preston Vance out of the service corridor.
Preston’s expensive tuxedo was torn, his hands were zip-tied behind his back, and his face was smeared with snot and terrified tears.
"Don Rossi! Please!" Preston wailed, falling onto his knees on the wet marble.
"I didn't know the necklace was under your protection! I swear on my mother's life, I didn't know!"
"Marcus Cole approached me! He said we could split the insurance payout fifty-fifty!"
Rafe turned toward Preston, his expression transforming instantly from tender vulnerability back into an icy, lethal mask of an emperor.
The temperature in the vast room seemed to drop ten degrees.
"You tried to rob my client, Preston," Rafe said, his voice ringing through the silent gallery like a tolling bell.
"You tried to ruin an honest artist’s reputation to pay your private debts."
"And worse," Rafe continued, stepping toward the shivering socialite,
"Your hired thug put his filthy hands on her throat."
"Don Rossi, please have mercy!" Preston begged, pressing his forehead against the damp floor.
Rafe stopped two feet away from him, looking down with cold, absolute disgust.

"Mercy is something you ask of God, Preston," Rafe said quietly.
"I am merely the auditor of your sins."
