Chapter 5 - An Uninvited Matriarch

Vanessa stopped dead in her tracks, her manicured hand frozen mid-air. Her blue eyes narrowed, darting past my shoulder into the dimly lit foyer of the loft. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of genuine fear cracked through her polished exterior.

""What did you just say?"" she hissed.

""Helios Holdings,"" I said, leaning down so only she could hear the words. ""Cayman registry number 4492. Five million dollars, embezzled directly from my trust account under the guise of paying off Elena Hayes. Do you want me to summon the press from the conservatory up here to discuss your jewelry business's real venture capital?""

Her face drained of color, turning the exact shade of her ivory silk dress. ""You... you don't know what you're talking about. Your mother handled that. It was all legal.""

""Nothing about threatening an impoverished young mother with four infants is legal, Vanessa,"" Marcus’s voice boomed from the foyer as he stepped beside me, holding his phone aloft. ""And every word out of your mouth is currently being archived to three redundant cloud servers for the federal grand jury.""

Before Vanessa could summon a reply, the heavy double doors of the elevator vestibule swung open again.

Eleanor Vance walked out.

At sixty-two, my mother looked like an empress carved from marble. Her silver hair was swept up into an immaculate chignon, and her black velvet cape trailed gracefully over the polished stone. She held an ivory-handled walking stick that she didn't need, using it merely as an instrument of rhythm and punctuation.

""That will be enough melodrama for one evening,"" Eleanor commanded, her voice cutting through the corridor with absolute authority. She didn't even look at Vanessa; her gaze was fixed squarely on me. ""Vanessa, go downstairs to the car. You are making a spectacle of yourself, and the Vance family does not tolerate spectacles.""

""Eleanor!"" Vanessa turned on her, her voice trembling with hysteria. ""He knows! He knows about Helios! He has Marcus here!""

""I told you to get in the car,"" Eleanor repeated, not raising her voice by an octave. The sheer chill in her tone was enough to make Vanessa step back, biting her lip in frustration. Without another word, Vanessa gathered her fur stole and hurried toward the elevator, her security team following silently behind.

Now, only my mother stood between me and the family I had lost for seven years.

""Step aside, Caleb,"" Eleanor said, walking toward my door with deliberate grace. ""I have no desire to conduct this discussion in a public hallway.""

""You don't cross this threshold, Mother,"" I said, not budging an inch. ""Not tonight. Not ever again.""

Eleanor stopped two feet away, her lip curling into a familiar, disdainful sneer. ""Do you truly believe you are the first young man to be blinded by a pretty face and a pair of sob stories? That girl was a parasite from the day you met her in Cambridge. She saw a multibillion-dollar fortune and decided to trap you with the oldest trick in history.""

""The oldest trick?"" A small, trembling voice came from behind me.

Elena had stepped out of the bedroom hallway. She had wiped the tears from her face, and though her knuckles were clenched tightly around the hem of her cardigan, her head was held high.

""I loved your son for who he was,"" Elena said, stepping squarely beside me. ""I loved him when he was driving a beat-up sedan and eating five-dollar pizza with me on the grass. You were the one who valued money over human life. You offered me five million dollars to murder my own dignity, and when I told you to go to hell, you weaponized the state against four innocent babies.""

Eleanor's gaze flickered over Elena, cold, dismissive, and utterly devoid of remorse. ""You were an insect, my dear. One does not negotiate with insects; one simply sweeps them out of the parlor before the guests arrive.""

May you like

""Those 'insects,'"" I snarled, stepping directly into my mother's face, ""are your granddaughters.""

""They are an embarrassment,"" Eleanor retorted, her eyes flashing with venom. ""And I have already arranged for their discreet relocation. The custody order is being served as we speak. By midnight, those children will be in protective custody upstate, where they can be properly processed without bringing disgrace upon the Vance family name.""
