Chapter 2 - The Scent of Lavender and Lies

The loft opened directly into a warm, open space with wide plank hardwood floors and floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over lower Manhattan. For years, the space had felt cavernous and sterile, a place where I merely slept between board meetings. But within five minutes, it was transformed into a whirlwind of life.
The girls shed their damp coats, kicking off scuffed sneakers that had clearly seen too many winters. Claire immediately discovered the velvet sectional, testing its bounce with cautious hops, while Chloe marched straight into the kitchen, eyeing the stainless-steel refrigerator.
""Do you have hot chocolate, mister?"" Chloe asked, tilting her head with that familiar, devastating smile.
""I have everything you want,"" I answered, peeling off my tailored tuxedo jacket and tossing it carelessly over a barstool. The multi-million-dollar diamond ring in the inner pocket clinked heavily against the granite counter, completely forgotten. ""Let's see what we can find.""
While the girls crowded around the kitchen island watching the kettle whistle, Elena wandered through the living room like a ghost visiting a world she wasn't meant to see. She stopped in front of the bookshelf, where a single, framed photograph from my college days stood between heavy art books. It was a picture of the two of us on the Charles River, sun-drenched and laughing, taken the week before everything fell apart.
""You kept it,"" she whispered, her fingertips hovering just inches from the glass.
""I hid it from everyone, including myself,"" I admitted, pouring warm milk into four ceramic mugs. ""Every time I tried to throw it out, I couldn't do it. My mind hated you for leaving, but the rest of me refused to believe the woman I knew would vanish into thin air.""
Elena wrapped her arms around her thin frame. Beneath the faded cotton shirt, she was far too slender; the past seven years had worn her down to pure muscle and stubborn will. ""Your mother came to my dorm room the day after I found out I was pregnant. I was terrified, Caleb. I was twenty-two, working two jobs, and suddenly expecting four babies. The doctors said it was a spontaneous quadruplet pregnancy—one in seven hundred thousand. I came to your family estate to tell you, but your mother intercepted me at the gate.""
""She told me you went to Europe for an internship,"" I ground out, my jaw aching from tension.
""She told me you were already engaged to Vanessa,"" Elena corrected, her voice flat with remembered despair. ""She produced an engagement registry and high-resolution photos of you two at some charity ball in the Hamptons. Then she told me that if I made a fuss, she would tie me up in custody lawsuits using the top attorneys in New York. She said a boy from the Vance dynasty would never be saddled with a poor girl's bastards. She promised that if I took you to court, your family would prove I was an unstable, impoverished lunatic and take the babies away to an institution.""
She paused, watching the four little girls take careful sips of their cocoa.
""I was a nobody, Caleb. I had no family, no money, and no voice. What chance did I have against the Vance Empire? So I packed my suitcase, took the night bus to Philadelphia, and hid.""
Before I could reach out to touch her, the heavy chime of the loft's private service elevator sounded from the back corridor. My security panel on the wall flashed amber.
The screen showed a private town car parked in the underground bay, and a courier standing at the private service threshold holding a heavy manila folder sealed with red wax.
I walked to the monitor and hit the intercom. ""Identify yourself.""
""Delivery for Caleb Vance from Vance Capital Legal Division,"" a flat, mechanical voice responded. ""Urgent court petition regarding child custody and protective orders, ordered by Mrs. Eleanor Vance.""

Elena gasped, rushing over to pull Claire and Caroline behind her skirts.
The game was already underway. My mother wasn't just trying to hide her crime; she was preparing to destroy Elena before the truth ever saw the light of day.
