Chapter 3 - Blood Doesn't Lie

The sealed manila envelope rested on the kitchen island like an unexploded shell. I didn't open it immediately. Instead, I called Marcus Ray, the only attorney in the city who owed his entire career to my grandfather rather than my mother. Marcus was ruthless, entirely independent, and hated Eleanor Vance with a passion that bordered on religious.
""Caleb?"" Marcus's gravelly voice barked through the speakerphone. ""Where the hell are you? The Caldwell family is having an absolute stroke at the conservatory. Vanessa’s father is threatening to pull the joint venture off the table if you don't show up in twenty minutes.""
""Let him pull it,"" I said calmly. ""Marcus, I need you at my SoHo loft right now. Bring Dr. Bennett from the private concierge lab. I need four rush DNA panels, and I need them certified by midnight.""
There was a dead silence on the line. Then, Marcus inhaled sharply. ""Tell me this isn't what I think it is.""
""It's Elena,"" I said simply. ""And four little girls who look like they were carved out of my own ribcage.""
Marcus swore quietly under his breath. ""I'm on my way. Keep the doors locked. Your mother has had private investigators tracking Elena Hayes for three years. If she knows you're together, she will scorch the earth to protect the merger.""
When the line went dead, Elena looked at me, her eyes wide with shock. ""She was tracking us?""
""Think about it, Elena,"" I said, pacing the length of the hardwood floor. ""How did you end up at that specific restaurant in Midtown? Who offered you that server shift?""
Elena's hand flew to her mouth. ""The regional manager... he called me out of the blue last week. Said a high-end French bistro needed an emergency server for private banquet rooms and offered triple the hourly rate. I couldn't turn it down. The girls needed winter coats, and our landlord had threatened an eviction notice for Tuesday.""
""It was an ambush,"" I realized, the pieces locking together in my mind with terrifying precision. ""She placed you where she could keep an eye on you while the engagement was finalized. She probably intended to have you arrested for vagrancy or trespass before the reception began, just to make sure you were locked up while I signed the joint marital trust with the Caldwells.""
Forty-five minutes later, Marcus arrived, accompanied by Dr. Bennett, a discreet, gray-haired physician who carried a silver medical kit.
The girls, by now full of warm toast and hot cocoa, were enchanted by the process. Dr. Bennett was gentle, turning the sterile cheek swabs into a game of who could open their mouths the widest like hungry baby birds.
""All done, little lady,"" Dr. Bennett said, gently tapping Caroline's nose. He sealed the four sample tubes, then took a swab from my own cheek before locking the case. ""The rapid-sequencing lab at the university is running hot tonight. I will have an unequivocal legal match in two hours, Caleb.""
""Make it ninety minutes,"" I said, handing him an envelope of cash for the lab staff. ""And don't file the digital records to the standard cloud registry. Hard copy only, hand-delivered.""
After the doctor departed, Marcus picked up the red-wax-sealed envelope my mother's courier had left. He used a silver pocketknife to slit the top and extracted a thick sheaf of legal documents. As his eyes skimmed the first two pages, his expression darkened to thunder.
""Your mother didn't just petition for an injunction, Caleb,"" Marcus said, his voice deadly quiet. ""She filed an emergency petition for temporary state custody of four unnamed minors residing with an indigent parent, citing severe neglect and child endangerment. She has a signature from Judge Albright—a judge whose campaign fund she bankrolls.""
Elena dropped to her knees beside the couch, burying her face in her hands. ""She's going to take my babies. She's going to use the police to take them away.""
May you like
I knelt beside her, pulling her hands away from her face and forcing her to look directly into my eyes.
""She had power over you when you were alone, Elena,"" I said, my voice steady and cold as steel. ""She doesn't have power over me. Tonight, the Vance dynasty finds out what happens when you steal a man's family.""
