Chapter 8 - The Syndicate Summit

Gemma woke up with a pounding headache and the sharp, metallic taste of copper on her tongue.

She was tied to an ornate, gilded high-back chair in the center of a massive, opulent ballroom. Crystal chandeliers hung from the soaring ceiling, casting brilliant golden light over long banquet tables draped in black silk. Seated around the perimeter of the room were fifty men and women dressed in bespoke tuxedos and couture evening gowns—the ruthless ruling council of the European underworld.

At the head of the banquet table sat Dmitri Volkov. He was in his late fifties, with silver hair combed neatly back, a sharp, aristocratic nose, and cold, dead eyes that looked at human life as mere ledger entries. In his hand, he casually swirled a glass of vintage scotch.

""Ah, the sleeping beauty awakens,"" Dmitri spoke smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom. The lords of crime watched in quiet amusement, none daring to speak against him. ""I must admit, Miss Vance, when my scouts told me my nephew had risked his entire empire, his extraction team, and his fortress for a common flower girl, I thought it was a joke. But seeing you now... I suppose Nikolai always had a weakness for fragile, temporary things.""

""Nikolai is ten times the man you will ever be,"" Gemma spat, lifting her chin with unyielding pride, refusing to cower before the mobsters. ""You had to hire fifty men, bribe his lieutenant, and drug a woman just to stand on his throne. You're not a king, Dmitri. You're a scavenger.""

A collective murmur rolled through the assembled mob bosses. Dmitri’s smile tightened, his knuckles whitening around his crystal glass. He stood up, slowly walking toward her, his polished leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the parquet floor.

""A sharp tongue for someone whose life ends in fifteen minutes,"" Dmitri whispered, drawing a small, silver-plated revolver from his inner jacket pocket and resting the cold muzzle directly against Gemma’s temple. ""Nikolai is already outside the hotel. He came alone, just as Marcus instructed. He walked straight into the lion's den without backup, trading his life for yours.""

Gemma’s breath hitched, pure terror seizing her heart. He came alone. He had abandoned his army, his fortress, and his tactical advantage just to keep her alive.

The grand double oak doors of the ballroom suddenly unlocked with a heavy, echoing thud.

The room went dead silent. The mob bosses stiffened, bodyguards reaching instinctively into their holsters. The doors slowly swung inward, revealing a single figure standing in the threshold.

It was Nikolai Rostov.

He wore a tailored charcoal three-piece suit, pristine and immaculate, without a single speck of dust or blood. His hands were empty, resting casually at his sides. But his eyes were pure, undiluted brimstone. The sheer aura of death and absolute authority radiating from him was so suffocating that several seasoned mob lieutenants actually took a step back, their hands shaking on their holsters.

""Uncle,"" Nikolai’s deep voice rolled through the massive hall like a funeral bell. ""You're sitting in my chair.""
