Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Perimeter

Two weeks at the Fortress passed in a surreal blur of luxury and high-stakes tension. Despite the lethal war brewing across the continent, Nikolai ensured Gemma wanted for nothing. He had an entire indoor conservatory built on the glass terrace, shipping in rare, exotic blooms from around the globe so she could continue practicing her floral arrangements. Every evening, he returned to the suite—often smelling of gunpowder and strategy rooms—just to sit quietly on the sofa and watch her trim stems and weave colors together. In those quiet hours, he wasn't a ruthless crime lord; he was simply the man from 4B who had learned to breathe again.

A tender, unspoken bond was forming between them, fragile yet unbreakable. But Gemma was not naive. She saw the war maps spread across the command room tables, the grim expressions of his captains, and the mounting tension in Nikolai’s posture as the days dragged on.

One crisp, clear midnight, Gemma was in the glass conservatory, arranging a vase of rare black lilies and white hydrangeas, unable to sleep. The moon cast a silver trail across the roaring ocean below.

Suddenly, the red emergency sirens across the entire compound flared to life, painting the pristine black stone walls in pulsating crimson. A deafening, metallic blast echoed from the subterranean sea dock below, vibrating the reinforced glass windows.

“Breach! Breach at Sector 4 water gate!” the automated security voice blasted through the overhead speakers. “Heavy infantry spotted. EMP detonation confirmed in lower communications!”

The conservatory doors burst open, and Nikolai appeared, fully geared in tactical black, an assault rifle slung across his chest and a pair of heavy handguns holstered at his hips. His face was set in pure, lethal rage.

""Nikolai!"" Gemma cried, dropping her floral shears.

""My uncle bought off the harbor master,"" Nikolai said, his voice deadly quiet and focused. ""Dmitri hired forty elite foreign mercenaries to hit the sea cliffs while our radar was blinded by the storm. They bypassed the outer perimeter.""

""What do we do?"" she asked, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Nikolai pulled a small, silver thumb drive and a sleek keycard from his tactical vest, pressing them firmly into Gemma’s trembling hand. ""The safe room is behind the wine cellar on Sub-level 1. It is built to withstand a tactical airstrike. You go down there with Marcus and lock the blast door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone. Not even my captains.""

""What about you?"" Gemma grabbed his tactical vest, refusing to let go. Tears shone in her eyes. ""You're going down to face them alone!""

May you like

""I am the master of this house,"" Nikolai whispered fiercely, cupping her cheeks with his hands and pulling her upward until their lips met in a fierce, breathless, electric kiss. The taste of salt, adrenaline, and desperate longing exploded between them, leaving Gemma completely breathless. He broke the kiss, resting his forehead against hers. ""I fought my way out of the gutters to build this throne, Gemma. I will not lose it tonight. And more importantly, I will not lose you. Now run!""

Before she could protest, Marcus, Nikolai’s top lieutenant, grabbed her arm and guided her swiftly toward the private elevator bank. As the elevator doors began to slide shut, Gemma caught one last glimpse of Nikolai Rostov. He racked the slide of his rifle, stepped into the crimson-lit corridor, and walked straight toward the gunfire like an unstoppable god of war.
