Chapter 10 - A Garden in Full Bloom

One year later.

The morning sun broke over the rolling green hills of the English countryside, burning away the gentle mist that hung over the sprawling meadows of Hampshire. Nestled in the heart of the estate stood a breathtaking, Victorian-style glass greenhouse, ten times larger than Tatiana’s old studio in Chiswick Street. Inside, thousands of vibrant flowers bloomed in breathtaking harmony: white peonies, crimson roses, exotic orchids, and delicate gypsophila, filling the warm air with an intoxicating perfume of life and growth.

Gemma stood at a wide, polished oak workbench, humming an old melody her grandmother had taught her. She wore a simple white linen sundress and a canvas apron, her blonde hair caught in a messy bun. In her hand, a pair of sharp brass shears made soft, rhythmic snipping sounds as she trimmed the stems of an elaborate floral centerpiece.

The war was over. Nikolai had systematically dismantled every faction that opposed his absolute rule, forging an era of unprecedented peace and stability across the syndicate territories. But while his name still commanded absolute terror across the capitals of Europe, here in Hampshire, the shadows never dared to cross the iron gates.

A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, pulling her back against a broad, warm chest. The unmistakable scent of cedar, rich smoke, and clean linen enveloped her senses. Gemma smiled, leaning her head back against Nikolai’s shoulder as he pressed a tender, lingering kiss against the sensitive curve of her neck.

""You're working too hard, my love,"" Nikolai rumbled softly, his voice full of a deep, contented warmth that only she ever heard. ""The royal charity gala isn't until tomorrow evening. You have an entire team of thirty florists waiting for your instructions outside.""

""They don't understand the balance of the hydrangeas like I do,"" Gemma teased, turning around in his embrace and wrapping her arms around his neck. She looked up into his dark, piercing eyes—eyes that had once held only exhaustion and slaughter, but now shone with fierce, unconditional love and peace. ""Besides, I like the quiet. It reminds me of where we started.""

Nikolai’s gaze softened with infinite devotion. He reached into the pocket of his tailored trousers and pulled out a small, worn piece of cream card stock—the expensive kind they used for sympathy arrangements. The edges were slightly creased, handled a thousand times over the past year, but the delicate, handwritten script remained perfectly legible:

Dear neighbor in 4B, I'm Gemma from 4C. If you ever need anything, please let me know.

Gemma’s eyes widened with a soft, affectionate laugh. ""You still keep that?""

""I keep it next to my heart every single day,"" Nikolai replied, his voice dropping to a low, reverent murmur. ""Because on the darkest night of my life, when I had forgotten what it meant to be a man, this little note told me that someone saw me. Not the monster. Not the boss. Just a tired man who needed an umbrella in the rain.""

He gently tucked the card away, then reached into his pocket once more, pulling out a small, velvet-lined box. He opened it, revealing a stunning, flawless emerald ring cut in the shape of a blooming rose, surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds that caught the morning light like dew drops on fresh petals.

Nikolai took Gemma’s trembling left hand in his large, calloused palm, his dark eyes searching hers with complete vulnerability.

""You healed my wounds, Gemma Vance. You brought beauty into my fortress, and you gave me a reason to build a world worth living in. I don't want to just be the neighbor who returns your umbrellas."" He dropped to one knee on the garden floor, looking up at her with raw, unfiltered adoration. ""Be my wife. Rule this empire beside me. Let me protect your light for the rest of my days.""

Tears of pure happiness spilled down Gemma’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

May you like

""Yes,"" she whispered, her voice ringing clear through the blooming greenhouse. ""A thousand times yes, Nikolai.""

He slid the ring onto her finger, rising to lift her off her feet, spinning her around as their laughter mingled with the scent of white peonies in the morning sun. The quiet girl with the scissors had offered her help to a dangerous stranger in the dark—and in return, the most feared king of the underworld had laid the world at her feet, planting a garden where blood once flowed, and promising a love that would never wither."
