Chapter 3 - Blood and Steel

The room spun for a fraction of a second, but the raw heat radiating from Nikolai’s skin snapped Gemma back into sharp reality. The scent of blood was thick, almost sweet, filling the enclosed kitchen space. She looked down at his shoulder. The bullet had ripped through the fabric of his shirt, leaving a ragged, blackened entry wound that oozed a steady stream of dark, venous blood. If he bled out on this floor, she knew with terrifying certainty that she wouldn't survive the night either.

""Sit back,"" she said, her voice shaking but surprisingly clear. ""Don't move.""

Nikolai leaned his head against the wooden cabinet behind him, his jaw set in a hard line. Gemma ripped open a bottle of medical-grade disinfectant and poured it generously over her hands, ignoring the stinging chill, before saturating a stack of sterile gauze. She grabbed a pair of surgical scissors from the kit, her fingers instinctively falling into the familiar cutting rhythm she used at Tatiana’s worktable every single day. With quick, decisive snips, she cut the ruin of his shirt away, exposing a broad, heavily muscled chest crisscrossed with old, faded silver scars.

""You've been hurt before,"" she murmured, pouring antiseptic directly over the fresh wound.

Nikolai hissed through clenched teeth, his neck muscles straining like steel cables. ""Occupational hazard. The bottle on the right... lidocaine. Inject it around the perimeter if you must, but don't waste time waiting for it to take full effect. We don't have ten minutes.""

Gemma discarded the needle. ""No time. You'll have to bear it.""

A glint of dark amusement flashed in his eyes despite the blinding agony. ""Cold-blooded. I like that.""

She picked up the curved surgical forceps, sterilizing the metal tip with iodine. Her hands shook violently for three seconds, but as she leaned over his shoulder, a strange, clinical calm washed over her. It was just like extracting a deep, stubborn thorn from an ancient garden bush—delicate work requiring balance and absolute control. She pressed her left palm firmly against his collarbone, feeling the frantic, powerful rhythm of his racing pulse under his skin.

""Look at the ceiling,"" she ordered.

""I'd rather look at you,"" Nikolai rasped, his eyes locked onto her face.

Gemma took a deep breath and inserted the tip of the forceps into the wound. Nikolai’s body went completely rigid. A low, guttural groan tore from his throat, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the underside of the wooden counter, the wood groaning under the sheer force of his hands. Gemma didn't hesitate. She felt the metallic resistance of the lead slug nestled against the bone. Gently, delicately, she maneuvered the clamps, feeling the texture through the steel instruments, and locked the teeth around the bullet.

With a swift, controlled twist, she pulled the flattened slug free. It dropped into a stainless-steel tray with a sharp, resonant clang.

""Bullet out,"" she exhaled, immediately grabbing a bundle of hemostatic gauze and ramming it against the cavity to stem the gush of blood. Nikolai let out a ragged breath, his head dropping forward until his forehead rested against her shoulder. His breath was hot against the exposed skin of her neck, sending an unexpected jolt of electricity down her spine.

""Good girl,"" he whispered, his voice faint, ragged, but full of dark reverence. ""Very good girl.""

""Don't pass out on me now,"" Gemma said, her hands rapidly wrapping self-adherent compression bandages around his shoulder and chest, binding the wound tightly. ""You promised me an explanation. You promised me protection.""

Before Nikolai could answer, the faint buzz of his encrypted radio on the counter vibrated against the stone. A cold, mechanical voice crackled through the small speaker: “Boss. Sweep team entered Chiswick Street from the east. Two black vans. Estimated arrival at your sector: two minutes. We are positioned on the roof for extraction.”

Nikolai lifted his head, the lethal, commanding look returning to his dark eyes instantly. He stood up, towering over Gemma, completely ignoring the excruciating pain in his stitched shoulder. He picked up his weapon, checked the magazine with a sharp click, and reached out to grasp Gemma’s chin, forcing her to look up into his fierce, unyielding gaze.

""The time for explanations is later,"" Nikolai said smoothly. ""Now, little neighbor, you come with me. Welcome to the family.""
