Chapter 7 - The Unmasking

The high-definition video filled the screen, crystal clear, with audio piping through the high-end sound system of the Ritz-Carlton.
The entire ballroom gasped simultaneously.
There was Veronica Cade, standing beside the sun-drenched pool in Myers Park, sneering at Eleanor Whitmore.
""IF YOU WANT YOUR BAG, GET INTO THE POOL AND FETCH IT YOURSELF!""
Veronica's voice echoed through the speakers, shrill and venomous.
On screen, Eleanor begged: ""Please. My husband’s photograph is inside. It’s the only picture I have left of him.""
The camera zoomed in with sickening clarity as Veronica snatched the purse from the older woman's hands and hurled it into the deep water with a sadistic smirk.
""Consider this a lesson about trespassing.""
The silence in the ballroom was absolute. Nobody breathed.
Then, the footage showed me setting down my tray, kicking off my shoes, and diving into the pool. It showed me pulling the soaked bag to safety, carefully drying the photograph of Arthur Whitmore, and handing it back to his weeping widow.
And finally, it showed Veronica threatening to destroy my family business and bribe city officials to ruin our lives.
The video faded to black.
The stage lights snapped back on.
Veronica was frozen at Table One, her crimson dress suddenly looking like a blood-soaked stain under the chandeliers. Several women at nearby tables pulled their chairs back, visibly recoiling from her.
Alex stepped to the microphone.
""The woman you just watched being humiliated is my mother, Eleanor Whitmore,"" Alex said, his voice ringing with quiet authority. ""She wore a simple cardigan because she had spent her morning volunteering at the downtown soup kitchen—a place the Cade family has never set foot in.""
Richard Cade’s hands were shaking as he looked around the room. City council members who had been slapping his back five minutes ago were now turning their backs on him. Major bank executives were staring at their plates in disgust.
""Furthermore,"" Alex continued, ""at ten o'clock this morning, Cade Capital illegally acquired a small commercial property using shell entities to evict Miss Miller's catering shop within eight hours, while flooding the internet with fabricated slander. This is not business. This is criminal malice.""
Alex paused, turning his gaze directly toward Richard Cade.
""Effective eight o'clock tomorrow morning, Whitmore Holdings is liquidating its forty-percent equity stake in Cade Commercial Bank. We will be transferring our sixty-five-million-dollar municipal development accounts to First Community Trust.""
Richard Cade went white. ""Alexander... you can't do that. That will trigger a liquidity run on our regional reserves!""
""Then you should have thought about that,"" Alex said coldly, echoing Veronica's exact words from the pool, ""before your daughter threw my mother's dignity into the water.""
The room erupted.
Dozens of flashbulbs went off as press photographers, who had originally come to cover the engagement dispute, turned their lenses directly on Veronica. She covered her face with her napkin, sobbing hysterically as her father dragged her by the arm toward the emergency exit, chased by an army of reporters with microphones thrust in their faces.
Alex looked across the vast ballroom, past the standing ovations and the cheering patrons, directly at me.

He raised his glass.
""Ladies and gentlemen,"" he said, smiling softly. ""Please enjoy dinner. It was prepared by the finest hands in the state of North Carolina.""
