Chapter 5 - The War in the Press

By noon, my mother was resting comfortably in a luxury private suite at Presbyterian Hospital. The doctors confirmed that her heart was structurally sound; the dizziness had simply been a severe panic attack caused by extreme stress and exhaustion. Eleanor Whitmore had refused to leave her bedside, sitting in the armchair beside Mom, sharing stories about their late husbands and drinking herbal tea.

Meanwhile, downtown Charlotte had become a battlefield.

Veronica Cade was not the type of woman to accept defeat gracefully. When news broke that Alex had officially canceled their high-profile engagement, her father, Richard Cade, launched a full-scale media offensive.

By two o'clock, local news stations and tabloid blogs were running front-page headlines:

“BILLIONAIRE HEIR DUMPS SOCIALITE FIANCÉE FOR LOW-CLASS CATERING GIRL!”

“SCANDAL IN MYERS PARK: Did Kitchen Help Seduce Alexander Whitmore Before the Wedding?”

Veronica had given an exclusive tearful interview on the steps of the Charlotte Country Club. Dressed in all black with no makeup, she wept into a silk handkerchief, claiming that she had caught me ""flirting aggressively"" with Alex in the garden, and that when she confronted me, I had pushed an innocent elderly guest toward the pool and staged the entire incident to play the victim.

Reporters were already camping outside Whitmore Tower.

Inside the sprawling executive kitchen on the fiftieth floor, I was unpacking boxes with trembling hands. The kitchen was breathtaking—gleaming Viking ranges, polished granite countertops, walk-in coolers as large as my old storefront, and floor-to-ceiling windows showing the blue Carolina horizon. But I couldn't appreciate any of it.

Every time I looked at my phone, another hateful message poured in on social media. People I had never met were calling me a home-wrecker, a gold-digger, a common thief.

The heavy glass door of the kitchen swung open.

Alex walked in, stripping off his suit jacket and rolling up his white dress shirt sleeves.

""You shouldn't be in here, Mr. Whitmore,"" I said, setting down a stack of porcelain bowls. ""The press is tearing your name apart down in the lobby. If someone photographs us together, it proves Veronica’s lies.""

""Let them talk,"" Alex said calmly. He walked over to the stainless steel prep table and picked up a wooden spoon, inspecting it with a slight grin. ""And stop calling me Mr. Whitmore. My name is Alex.""

""How can you be so calm? She's telling the whole world I seduced you! She's claiming I pushed your mother!""

Alex’s smile faded. His eyes grew dark and focused. ""Hannah, Veronica’s father owns three newspapers and two television affiliates in this state. For ten years, the Cade family has bullied every business in Charlotte that dared to cross them. They think money buys the truth.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver flash drive, placing it on the counter between us.

""What is that?"" I asked.

""My estate in Myers Park has thirty-two high-definition surveillance cameras,"" Alex replied. ""One of them is mounted inside the decorative stone lantern directly above the shallow end of the swimming pool. It recorded the entire event with full audio.""

I stared at the tiny metal drive. ""You have the video?""

""I have forty-five minutes of continuous 4K footage,"" Alex said. ""From the moment Veronica intercepted my mother at the gate, to her mocking my father's military service, to her snatching the purse and throwing it into the water. It also captures you kicking off your shoes and jumping in without a second's hesitation, followed by Veronica threatening to have your business destroyed.""

My breath hitched in my throat. ""Why haven't you released it to the press yet?""

""Because in war, Hannah, you don't fire your main artillery when the enemy is in a bunker,"" Alex said, his voice quiet and deadly. ""You wait until they step into the open field.""

He looked at me intently. ""Tonight is the annual Mecklenburg Charity Gala at the Ritz-Carlton. Veronica and her father purchased the head table three months ago. Richard Cade intends to give a speech announcing a fifteen-million-dollar endowment—and use the podium to publicly demand the business community boycott Whitmore Holdings for breach of contract.""

""What are you going to do?"" I asked, my heart thumping against my ribs.

Alex leaned forward across the granite counter. ""I'm going to feed them dinner.""
