Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala

The grand ballroom of the Ritz-Carlton was draped in gold silk and shimmering crystal. Over six hundred of North Carolina’s most influential figures—bankers, politicians, real estate titans, and socialites—chattered over crystal flutes of vintage champagne.

At Table One, sitting front and center, was the Cade family.

Veronica looked radiant in a custom crimson silk gown that hugged her frame, diamonds cascading around her throat like icicles. Her father, Richard Cade, sat beside her, an imposing gray-haired man with cold, calculating eyes, accepting condolences and handshakes from fellow board members.

""Don't worry, darling,"" Richard whispered to his daughter, patting her manicured hand. ""By tomorrow morning, Alex Whitmore's stock will drop twenty percent. Nobody walks away from a Cade without bleeding.""

Veronica smiled, sipping her drink. ""I want that catering girl blacklisted from every kitchen on the East Coast, Daddy. I want her scrubbing floors in a diner by next week.""

""Consider it done.""

Suddenly, the house lights dimmed.

The master of ceremonies took the stage, adjusting the microphone. ""Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the fifty-second annual Mecklenburg Children’s Hospital Gala. Before we begin our keynote address, we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to our culinary host for the evening. When the original catering company backed out this morning, an extraordinary new partner stepped forward to sponsor and prepare tonight's multi-course dinner entirely free of charge.""

Veronica frowned, whispering to her father. ""Who backed out? I didn't authorize a change in caterers.""

""Please welcome,"" the host continued, ""Hannah Miller and the team from Hannah’s Table, presented in partnership with Whitmore Holdings!""

The ballroom doors swung open.

A fleet of forty synchronized servers in crisp black uniforms filed into the dining hall, carrying silver-domed platters. Behind them, walking with quiet poise and wearing a tailored navy blazer over an elegant black dress, was me.

Veronica gasped, her face draining of color. ""What is that peasant doing here?!""

Richard Cade slammed his palm against the table, his face turning purple. ""Is this a joke? Security! Remove that woman!""

Before security could take a step, Alexander Whitmore walked onto the main stage.

He didn't take the podium. He stood beside the massive twenty-foot digital projection screen that dominated the backdrop of the stage. He was wearing a classic tuxedo, looking every inch the billionaire titan the city knew him to be.

""Ladies and gentlemen,"" Alex’s deep voice echoed through the auditorium, cutting through the murmurs like a scalpel. ""Before dinner is served, I believe the city of Charlotte deserves an explanation regarding the recent public statements made by Miss Veronica Cade.""

Richard Cade stood up, pointing an accusatory finger toward the stage. ""Alexander! You have disgraced my daughter! You have violated the sanctity of an engagement and brought a street girl into our circle! Sit down or my attorneys will file an injunction before midnight!""

Alex didn't blink. ""You wanted to talk about dignity, Richard? You wanted to talk about honor?""

May you like

He held up a small remote control and pressed the central button.

The massive ballroom screen flickered to life.
