Chapter 7 - The Confession on the Pier

"Nobody is going to shoot you, Margaret!" Emily called out, stepping calmly past the line of police officers before anyone could stop her.
"Emily?" Margaret gasped, staring in shock at the woman she thought had been driven out of the city.
"Zion is alive, Margaret," Emily said, her voice steady and soothing against the howling gale.
"He is breathing on his own in the ICU. You haven't taken a human life tonight."
Margaret collapsed to her knees on the slippery wooden planks, sobbing violently into her hands.
"I didn't want to hurt him... God forgive me, I swear I didn't want to hurt that sweet boy!"
I walked up beside Emily, signaling the officers to lower their weapons.
"Then why did you do it, Margaret?" I asked, struggling to keep the rage from choking my words. "I paid you three times the standard wage. I gave you a suite in my home."
"Richard had my son!" Margaret cried, lifting her tear-streaked face.
"My boy Tommy owed four hundred thousand dollars to loan sharks in Atlantic City! Richard bought the debt! He told me if I didn't administer the drops over thirty days, he would have Tommy thrown into an incinerator!"
She pulled a crumpled, waterlogged burner phone from her pocket and threw it across the planks toward my feet.
"All the recordings are on that device! Every phone call, every threat, every bank routing code Richard gave me! I kept them because I knew... I knew he would try to silence me once the baby died!"
Detective Hayes stepped forward, bagging the burner phone with extreme care.
"Officers, secure her," Hayes instructed softly. "Get her a thermal blanket and bring her to holding."
As two officers gently helped Margaret to her feet and led her toward a cruiser, she looked back at Emily with haunted eyes.
"Thank you," Margaret whispered through her tears. "Thank you for stopping me from becoming a monster."

Emily nodded silently, watching the car pull away into the storm.
Justice was finally turning its wheels, but the road back to safety was only beginning.
