Chapter 1 - The Doctor's Chilling Revelation

"Mr. Whitaker, then there's something you need to know," Dr. Morrison said, lowering her voice as hospital machines beeped steadily down the corridor.

Her expression was grave, stripped of any professional politeness.

"Your housemaid didn't endanger your baby boy. She saved his life."

I gripped the cold metal armrest of the waiting room chair, the blood roaring in my ears like a freight train.

"What are you talking about?" I rasped, my throat raw from holding back tears. "He stopped breathing ten minutes after she put him in that sink."

"He stopped breathing because someone coated his skin in high-potency transdermal sleeping sedatives," Dr. Morrison said firmly.

She held up a clear sealed biohazard bag containing the damp washcloth Emily had used in the sink.

"The residue we scraped from Zion’s neck and back was a concentrated veterinary tranquilizer disguised in lavender baby oil. If that maid hadn't washed off seventy percent of that compound under running warm water, Zion's respiratory system would have permanently shut down before your ambulance ever arrived."

The floor felt like it dropped out from beneath my feet.

Every single arrogant word I had spat at Emily in the kitchen echoed inside my skull, sharp and venomous.

I don't pay you to think. I pay you to follow instructions. You're fired.

She had looked at me with tears in her eyes, trying to tell me something crucial about my son, and I had silenced her like a tyrant.

"Where is Margaret?" I demanded suddenly, my fists trembling with a terrifying surge of adrenaline.

"When the paramedics arrived at your estate, your head nanny was nowhere to be found," Dr. Morrison replied, gesturing toward two uniformed police detectives walking swiftly down the hall.

"And according to our toxicology panel, Mr. Whitaker, this wasn't an accidental overdose. Someone in your household has been systematically drugging your child for weeks."
