Chapter 9 - The Debt of Life

The afternoon sun danced over the calm waters of New York Harbor, painting the surface in shimmering shades of liquid gold.

I walked out onto the stone terrace of the Romano estate, where Lorenzo stood by the railing, dressed in a simple navy linen shirt and dark trousers, looking out at the Statue of Liberty in the distance.

He turned as he heard my footsteps, his gray-blue eyes softening with that rare, captivating warmth that made my heart flutter wildly.

"Major news from Washington today, Miss Santos," Lorenzo murmured, holding out a glass of iced lemonade for me.

"The case is closed, Lorenzo," I smiled, accepting the glass, my fingers lightly brushing his. "Petrov pled guilty two hours ago to avoid the death penalty. He confessed to cutting Mateo's brakes."

Lorenzo nodded slowly, taking a deep breath of the fresh, salty air. "Mateo can finally rest in peace."

I pulled the four-million-dollar government check from my purse and laid it on the stone table between us.

Lorenzo looked at the check, then raised an eyebrow with amusement. "Are you attempting to pay me for my protection services, Isabella?"

"No," I replied, taking a step closer until our chests were inches apart. "I am giving half of this to the fallen officers' memorial fund in Mateo's name. But I wanted you to see that I don't need your money, Lorenzo."

"I never thought you did," he answered softly, his voice dropping into that deep, intoxicating register that sent shivers racing down my spine.

"Then why did you keep me here?" I asked, looking directly into his eyes, laying my heart bare on the edge of the water. "You promised Mateo you would protect me until the danger passed. The danger is gone. Why haven't you told me to leave?"

Lorenzo reached out with both hands, his large, calloused palms gently cupping my face. His touch was reverent, tender, and completely unhurried.

"Because the moment you dropped that champagne tray, Isabella, I saw a woman with more courage and honor than anyone I have ever met in my life," he whispered, his thumbs stroking my cheekbones. "I protected you because of a debt to your uncle. But I want to keep you here because my heart refuses to let you go."

A sweet, breathless laugh escaped my lips. "A mafia don with a heart? That sounds like a dangerous rumor, Mr. Romano."

"It's not a rumor, Isabella," Lorenzo smiled, leaning down until his lips hovered a fraction of an inch from mine. "It is a fact. But you are free. You have your degree to finish, your life to build. If you walk out that gate, my men will never stop you."

I reached up, wrapping my arms around his broad neck, resting my forehead against his.

"I spent my whole life looking for a place where I felt safe, Lorenzo," I breathed against his lips. "I'm not walking away from the only man who built a fortress just to keep me whole."

Lorenzo leaned down and kissed me, deep, passionate, and slow, sealing a promise that had begun in blood and ended in absolute, unconditional love.
