Chapter 8 - The Fall of the Oligarchs

The takedown of the Vance-Petrov arms pipeline was swift, absolute, and broadcast across every major news network by sunrise.

Federal agents, backed by the comprehensive evidence contained on Mateo’s encrypted drive, raided Senator Marcus Vance’s Washington residence and corporate offices before dawn.

The morning headlines were catastrophic: SENATOR ARRESTED IN MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR ARMS CONSPIRACY; INTERNATIONAL CRIME PIPELINE AT PORT OF NEWARK DISMANTLED.

Viktor Petrov and twelve corrupt customs administrators were locked in federal holding cells without bail, facing mandatory life sentences for treason, racketeering, and the murder of federal auditor Mateo Santos.

Through it all, Lorenzo Romano’s name remained miraculously absent from the indictments.

The evidence had been submitted through an anonymous Department of Justice whistleblower portal, verified independently by federal forensic teams.

At noon, I stood in the grand office of the United States District Attorney in Manhattan.

US Attorney David Sterling slid a certified document across his mahogany desk, accompanied by an official gold medal of honor.

"Ms. Santos," Sterling said with profound respect. "Your uncle’s name has been fully cleared. The official records have been amended to reflect that Mateo Santos died in the line of duty, defending the security of this nation."

Tears filled my eyes as I picked up the heavy medal.

"The department has also finalized the federal whistleblower reward," Sterling continued, handing me an official cashier's check. "Four point two million dollars, disbursed under the anti-smuggling asset recovery provisions."

Four point two million dollars.

Enough to pay off my tuition ten times over, buy my own home, and ensure that I would never have to carry another catering tray for the rest of my life.

I walked out of the federal courthouse onto the sunny steps of Foley Square.

Waiting at the curb was the sleek black sedan that had rescued me from the hotel kitchen forty-eight hours earlier.

Dante stood by the rear door, opening it with a respectful, knowing smile. "The boss is waiting at the harbor, Isabella."

I held my head high, smoothed the front of my coat, and climbed inside, ready to face the man who had transformed my entire existence.
