Chapter 5 - The Velvet Chains

By midnight, I was shown to a spacious guest suite on the third floor of the fortress.
The room was luxurious—a king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, a private balcony facing the harbor, and an adjoining dressing room stocked with women's cashmere sweaters, tailored trousers, and silk robes that happened to fit my measurements with uncanny accuracy.
I locked the heavy wooden door, pushed a velvet armchair against the handle, and took a hot shower to wash away the scent of catering kitchen grease and gunpowder.
When I stepped out, wrapped in a thick charcoal bathrobe, someone was knocking gently on the balcony's French doors.
Panic seized my chest. I grabbed a heavy brass candlestick from the nightstand and tiptoed toward the glass.
Outside on the stone terrace, illuminated by the harbor lights, stood Lorenzo. He held a small wooden box in his hand—the antique, hand-carved music box Uncle Mateo had given me six years ago.
I unlocked the glass door, pulling it open with a sharp, accusatory glare. "You broke into my apartment?!"
"Petrov's men broke into your apartment thirty minutes ago, Isabella," Lorenzo replied, stepping into the warm bedroom and setting the music box on the desk. "They tore your mattress apart, shattered your mirrors, and ripped up the floorboards looking for this."
My stomach dropped into a cold, empty abyss. The modest home I had worked so hard to maintain, the safe sanctuary of my youth, was completely trashed.
"My team extracted the box two hours before they breached your block," Lorenzo said, pulling a tiny brass key from his pocket. "It's time to open it."
I hesitated, looking at the familiar polished wood. For years, I had turned the tiny silver crank just to hear the delicate notes of Clair de Lune play when I missed my uncle's laughter.
I stepped forward, took the brass key with trembling fingers, and inserted it into a hidden, microscopic keyhole carved beneath the floral inlay on the bottom.
With a soft mechanical click, a false bottom dropped open into my palm.
Inside lay a heavy black titanium USB drive, stamped with the official insignia of the United States Department of Homeland Security, accompanied by a handwritten note on yellowed legal paper.
I unfolded the paper. My uncle's neat, familiar handwriting stared back at me:
Bella, my sweet girl.If you are reading this, my brakes didn't hold. Do not go to the authorities. The rot goes all the way to the district director's chair. Find Lorenzo Romano. Give him this key. He is a dangerous man, but he is a man of his word. Trust him to finish the work I started.Love always, Uncle Mateo.
Tears finally broke through my defenses, hot and heavy, splashing onto the yellowed parchment.

A broad, warm hand settled gently against the side of my neck. Lorenzo drew me against his chest, holding me firmly as the sorrow of four years of unanswered questions finally poured out in quiet sobs.
"He didn't abandon you, Isabella," Lorenzo whispered against my hair, his touch surprisingly tender. "He fought to the very end to keep you clean. Now it's my turn to honor his sacrifice."
