Chapter 8 - Breaking Ground

A year later, the Newark waterfront looked nothing like the dark, secretive industrial wasteland it had been under Luciano’s control.
The rusted barbed wire had been torn down, replaced by manicured green parkways, public walking trails, and modern solar-paneled logistics facilities that hummed with clean, legitimate commerce.
The main building had been christened the Vance-Voss Maritime Academy, an endowed educational institution providing technical training, maritime engineering degrees, and cybersecurity certifications for working-class youth from the surrounding boroughs.
On a crisp autumn morning, hundreds of local workers, students, and city officials gathered on the newly paved promenade for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Serena stood at the podium beneath a white canopy, wearing an elegant ivory trouser suit that caught the bright October sun.
Her face was radiant, free of the exhaustion and tension that had defined her twenties, her eyes glowing with deep, enduring pride.
"This port was built on the sweat and honesty of men and women who believed in hard work," Serena told the cheering crowd, her voice amplified across the harbor.
"For too long, their labor was exploited by men who operated in the shadows. Today, we return this harbor to the light. Every job created here is protected, every pension is guaranteed, and every student who walks through these doors will know that integrity is the only real foundation of success."
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, ship horns blaring across the water in a celebratory salute.
Standing in the front row, Katherine Vance, the attorney who had guided Serena through the federal cooperation process, raised her coffee cup with a proud, knowing smile.
Beside her, Daniel stood with his hands tucked into his slacks, watching Serena with an affection he had long ceased trying to hide.
When the ceremony concluded and the guests moved toward the outdoor reception, Serena stepped down from the stage, walking toward the wooden railing that overlooked the open channel.
The water was sparkling, a clear, brilliant blue under the autumn sky.
Daniel walked over, leaning his forearms against the railing beside her, breathing in the crisp, salt-tinged air.
"The board approved the expansion into Singapore this morning," Daniel remarked casually. "We’re opening three new offices by January."
Serena turned her head, smiling at him. "Can they survive without us for two weeks?"
Daniel arched an eyebrow, looking intrigued. "Are you proposing a vacation, Miss Voss? In the middle of an acquisition quarter?"
"I’m proposing a trip to Lake Como," Serena replied softly, her hazel eyes dancing with warmth.
"Just the two of us. No laptops, no federal filings, and no financial risk assessments."
Daniel looked at her for a long, tender moment, reaching out to tuck a stray strand of dark hair behind her ear.
May you like
His fingers were warm, gentle, and familiar.
"I thought you'd never ask," Daniel whispered.
