Chapter 1 - The Face in the Chandelier Light

The Pierre Hotel ballroom hummed with the discreet, predatory energy of Manhattan’s apex predators. Crystal flutes chimed against silver trays, laughter rolled across arrangements of white orchids, and string quartets played softly enough to permit conversations worth nine figures.
Serena Voss stood beside the grand marble balustrade, holding a glass of sparkling water. Her gown was an architectural masterpiece of midnight-navy silk, cut with severe, elegant lines that emphasized her posture.
Her dark hair was swept into a chignon pinned with antique platinum, completely unlike the loose, modest curls she had worn when she was twenty-six.
Across the parquet floor, Luciano Moretti was still holding her hand.
His grip was firm, practiced, and radiating the magnetic confidence of a man who believed every room was built for his arrival.
He was forty-one now. The silver threading his dark temples only made him look more distinguished, like an Italian prince who had successfully traded back-alley muscle for private equity boardrooms.
"Have we met?" he asked again, his dark eyes searching hers with casual curiosity.
"You'd remember," Serena said.
Her voice had changed over five years. The soft, conciliatory cadence of a dutiful wife who walked on eggshells had been replaced by the low, resonant timbre of an executive who had spent sixty months negotiating with Swiss bankers and federal prosecutors.
Luciano smiled, charmed by what he perceived as playful social intrigue.
"I don't usually forget remarkable women," he murmured, smoothing his tailored Tom Ford lapel. "Especially not the founder of Voss Strategic. Your firm took forty percent of the European maritime security market in three years, Miss Voss. That is ruthless work."
"I find that precision usually beats ruthlessness, Mr. Moretti," Serena replied, her pulse resting at a cool, even sixty beats a minute.
Beside Luciano, Camille Reeves stood stiffly, clutching an ostrich-skin clutch as though it were a shield.
Camille was twenty-nine now, but the past five years had not been kind to her youthful glow. Her smile was tight, strained by the relentless social scrutiny that followed women who married powerful men on the heels of scandal.
On Camille’s earlobes dangled the exact pair of diamond cluster earrings Serena had picked out in Milan seven years ago.
"Luciano speaks of your company constantly," Camille said, her voice pitched with brittle sweetness. "He’s been trying to secure a private meeting with your advisory board for six months. We were thrilled to see you on the patron list tonight."
"Voss Strategic chooses its partners with extreme care, Mrs. Moretti," Serena noted, her gaze drifting over Camille’s earrings without the slightest flicker of emotion.
Luciano stepped closer, subtly edging Camille half a step behind him, a gesture so familiar it made Serena's throat tighten with ancient memories.
"My conglomerate, Moretti Global, is expanding its transatlantic shipping corridors," Luciano said, dropping his voice into the intimate register he used when closing an acquisition. "We need comprehensive digital security and financial risk auditing. We're prepared to offer Voss Strategic an exclusive twenty-million-dollar retainer."
Serena looked at him.
Really looked at him.
She saw the man who had checked his watch while her life was crumbling on their foyer rug. She saw the man who had handed her an envelope containing two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to erase four years of blood, sweat, and sleepless nights.
"We don't take retainers from shipping groups facing pending regulatory reviews," Serena said calmly.
Luciano’s charming smile stiffened.
A sharp, defensive edge entered his eyes. "Moretti Global has never failed a regulatory review in twelve years."
"There is always a first time for an audit to uncover what was buried, Mr. Moretti," she said.
Before Luciano could counter, Daniel Cho stepped up beside Serena, wearing a crisp charcoal tuxedo with an understated silver tie. He handed Serena a discreet black folder.
"The London office is on the encrypted line, Serena," Daniel said, his cool gaze briefly touching Luciano before returning to his business partner. "The board needs your authorization on the Atlantic transfer."
Luciano blinked, his eyes darting between Daniel and Serena.
"Serena?" Luciano repeated, the name tasting strange and heavy on his tongue.
May you like
Serena turned to him, her expression pleasant, detached, and completely untouchable.
"Excuse us, Mr. Moretti. Enjoy the gala."
