Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

By midday, every financial network in the English-speaking world was broadcasting footage of Luciano Moretti being led out of the Mercer Hotel in handcuffs.

His Tom Ford suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his face buried against the chest of a federal agent to shield himself from the blinding flashes of hundreds of news cameras.

Below the live feed, the ticker tape scrolled continuously:

MORETTI GLOBAL COLLAPSES; FEDERAL GRAND JURY INDICTS LUXURY SHIPPING TYCOON ON RACKETEERING CHARGES; VOSS STRATEGIC NAMED AS KEY COOPERATING FIRM.

In the penthouse on Fifth Avenue, Camille Reeves was surrounded by moving boxes, screaming hysterically into her phone as bank marshals pasted bright red repossession notices onto the marble foyer pillars.

Her accounts were frozen, her jewelry was seized as assets purchased with laundered funds, and her prominent family had already issued a formal press release disowning any connection to Luciano’s business dealings.

Across the Atlantic, in the Zurich headquarters of Voss Strategic, the atmosphere was completely serene.

The glass-and-steel offices overlooking the lake hummed with the quiet, focused energy of seventy senior analysts monitoring market fluctuations on dual-screen workstations.

Serena stood in her corner office, watching the snow fall gently over the Alps in the distance.

She wore a simple cream turtleneck and dark slacks, a warm mug of black coffee cradled in her hands.

A gentle knock sounded on her door, and Daniel Cho walked in, holding an encrypted tablet.

"The federal court in Manhattan denied his bail an hour ago," Daniel said, setting the tablet on the coffee table. "Luciano is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center pending trial. The prosecutors estimate a minimum sentence of twenty-five years without parole."

Serena looked down at the dark surface of her coffee, feeling a quiet, heavy stillness settle in her chest.

"And Camille?" she asked softly.

"She signed over the penthouse and all associated trusts to satisfy the asset forfeiture warrants," Daniel replied. "She’s moving back to her parents' country house in Connecticut. The society boards removed her name from their registries this morning."

Serena nodded slowly, feeling neither joy nor vengeance.

For five long years, she had carried the cold, sharp memory of that rainy night like a stone in her pocket.

She had worked eighteen-hour days, endured late-night interrogations by federal agents, and rebuilt her life from a single suitcase, all while wondering if she would ever feel clean again.

Now, the monster that had cast a shadow over her youth was locked in a concrete cage, stripped of his money, his vanity, and his illusions.

"Are you all right, Serena?" Daniel asked, stepping closer, his voice soft with genuine concern.

Serena turned to look at him.

Daniel had stood beside her when they couldn't afford heating oil in their first studio above the bakery. He had never questioned her integrity, never demanded more than his share, and had spent five years treating her with the quiet, unyielding respect she had deserved all along.

"I'm not just all right, Daniel," she said, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips for the first time in months.

"I'm finally finished."
