Chapter 5 - The Ledger of Blood

Luciano stared at the glowing laptop screen, his breath stopping dead in his lungs.

On the display was an official Department of Justice seal, followed by a sealed seventy-page federal indictment charging Luciano Moretti, Arthur Vance, and associates with forty-two counts of wire fraud, extortion, racketeering, and conspiracy to traffic illicit maritime freight.

At the bottom of the witness list, highlighted in clear black text, was one name:

Cooperating Witness CW-1: Serena Voss (formerly Moretti).

"You... you went to the feds?" Luciano whispered, the room spinning around him in dizzying circles. "You gave them the Newark leases? The port authorities?"

"I gave them everything, Luciano," Serena said calmly, leaning back in her chair.

"Every bribe you paid to union stewards in 2020. Every shell corporation you opened under my forged signature. Every dollar you laundered through the concrete terminals in Queens."

"You were my wife!" Luciano shouted, jumping to his feet, terror finally stripping away the last remnants of his charm.

"You were part of it! You signed those documents too! If they put me in a federal penitentiary, you go down with me! Katherine Vance can't protect you from conspiracy charges!"

Serena didn't flinch at his shouting.

She took a slow sip of her warm tea, looking up at him with unshakeable resolve.

"My immunity agreement was signed fourteen months ago, Luciano. I turned over every cent of my settlement money to the victims' restitution fund. I sat in a basement conference room in lower Manhattan for three hundred hours, walking federal prosecutors through ledgers they didn't have the training to read."

She pointed to the window, where the rain was beginning to drum softly against the glass.

"I answered for my sins, Luciano. I didn't run away, and I didn't hide behind expensive attorneys. I paid my debt to the truth. Now, you have to pay yours."

Luciano backed toward the door, clutching his chest, his breathing ragged and shallow.

"The indictment... when is it being unsealed?"

"Ten o'clock this morning," Serena said, checking the sleek watch on her wrist. "In eighteen minutes."

"You set me up," Luciano choked out, his eyes bulging with panic. "You invited me to this room to keep me from reaching the private airstrip in Teterboro!"

"You invited yourself, Luciano," Serena replied softly. "You thought you could buy me back for twenty million dollars because you believe everything in this world has a price tag."

The hallway outside the room suddenly filled with the heavy, coordinated stomping of tactical boots.

Heavy thuds rattled against the wooden door.

"Federal agents! Open the door!" a loud, commanding voice barked through the wood.

Luciano spun around, grabbing the brass doorknob, his knuckles turning white.

"Serena, please! Call them off! I have thirty million in gold bullion in a safe in the Bahamas! We can disappear together! Just like we planned in the beginning!"

Serena stood up from the desk, picking up her coat and handbag.

She walked toward the connecting door that led to the adjoining suite, pausing with her hand on the knob.

She looked back at him one last time—the man she had once loved with all her naive, young heart, now reduced to a trembling, sweating coward clawing at a locked exit.

"There was never an 'us,' Luciano," she said quietly. "There was only a woman who worked, and a man who took the credit."

The heavy hotel room door was breached with a thunderous hydraulic crack, wood splintering inward as half a dozen FBI tactical agents in heavy body armor swarmed the room, weapons drawn.

"Luciano Moretti, get on the ground! Hands behind your head! Do it now!"

May you like

Luciano collapsed onto the carpet, tears of humiliation and terror streaming down his face as the cold steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.

Serena stepped into the adjoining suite and closed the door behind her, leaving the noise of his arrest behind forever.
