Chapter 7 - Public Humiliation

The media frenzy on the courthouse steps was reaching a fever pitch when our private black limousine pulled up to the curb.
Flashbulbs popped frantically as reporters jostled for position around Adrian and his attorney.
"Mr. Vance! Are you claiming your wife planned this divorce before you even went to the hospital?" an ambitious young reporter shouted over the din.
"Absolutely!" Adrian yelled back, dramatically dabbing his dry eyes with a handkerchief. "I walked into that hospital room with open arms, ready to celebrate the birth of my boys! Instead, she ambushed me with corporate documents! She used our children as pawns to steal my life's work!"
"Is that so, Adrian?"
My voice sliced through the cacophony, amplified by the heavy quiet that suddenly rippled through the gathered crowd.
The reporters turned in unison, cameras pivoting rapidly toward the base of the marble staircase.
I walked up the stone steps flanked by my father and two senior partners from the city's premier white-collar defense firm.
I wore a sharply tailored navy coat, my head held high, radiating an undeniable aura of authority and calm power.
"Evelyn?" Adrian muttered, his microphone picking up the sharp intake of his breath.
His attorney quickly nudged him, whispering excitedly into his ear, believing my appearance was an unscripted public relations goldmine.
"Here she is, ladies and gentlemen!" Adrian's lawyer barked into the microphones. "The heiress who used her billionaire father's influence to crush an honest entrepreneur!"
I stopped three feet from the microphone stand, looking directly into Adrian's guilty, terrified eyes.
"An honest entrepreneur?" I asked, my voice carrying clearly across the quieted plaza. "Adrian, did you tell these journalists about the visit you paid me in the maternity ward thirty-six hours after I delivered our triplets?"
Adrian's throat bobbed nervously. "Evelyn, this isn't the forum to discuss private domestic—"
"Did you tell them that you brought your mistress, Celeste Monroe, into my recovery room?" I interrupted, my tone cutting like a diamond scalpel. "Did you tell them that while I was still attached to an IV, unable to lift my head, you threw divorce papers onto my blanket and told me that no one would ever want a woman with three babies and no job?"
The reporters gasped in unison, the shutters of fifty cameras clicking furiously as they zoomed in on Adrian's reddening face.
"That's a lie!" Adrian stammered, sweating profusely under the harsh television lights. "She's making that up to gain sympathy!"
"Fortunately, modern hospitals maintain comprehensive high-definition security footage with audio recording in all private corridors and patient rooms," my attorney announced, holding up a certified digital drive. "A complete, unedited recording of Mr. Vance's visit has already been filed with the family court and released to every major news network."
Adrian's knees visibly shook.
He stared at the flash drive as if it were a detonator ready to destroy what was left of his public image.
"Furthermore," my father stepped forward, his commanding presence immediately silencing the murmuring reporters. "Since Mr. Vance invited the press to examine his corporate ethics, I believe the public deserves full transparency regarding Vance Logistics."
My father gestured toward two men in dark suits who had just walked out of the courthouse doors.
They were federal agents wearing badges from the Department of Labor and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
"Adrian Vance," the lead federal agent stated loudly, stepping directly behind the podium. "You are under arrest pursuant to an indictment issued by the grand jury for wire fraud, embezzlement of employee pension funds, and grand larceny."
Adrian froze, his jaw slack, the color draining entirely from his skin until he looked like a walking corpse.
"Pension funds?" a reporter screamed out. "Mr. Vance, did you steal your drivers' pensions?"
Before Adrian could utter a single word of denial, the federal agents grabbed his arms, spun him around, and snapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.
His cheap attorney stepped three feet away from him, holding up his hands and loudly declaring he was withdrawing as counsel immediately.
Adrian struggled against the agents' grip, twisting his neck frantically to look at me as he was dragged down the courthouse steps.
"Evelyn! Please!" Adrian screamed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched, pathetic wail. "Think of the boys! You can't let them put their father in prison! Call your dad off! Tell him to drop the charges!"
I stood at the top of the marble stairs, watching the police push his head down into the back of a waiting squad car.

"You should have thought about our sons before you broke your promises, Adrian," I whispered into the wind.
The squad car doors slammed shut, the sirens blared into the afternoon sky, and Adrian Vance was driven away to face the justice he so richly deserved.
