Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Greed

Adrian’s breath came in ragged, shallow gasps as his eyes scanned the legal document resting on the glass table.
Every single clause, every debt covenants schedule, and every collateral agreement bore the golden emblem of Apex Asset Management.
At the very bottom of the primary mezzanine financing agreement was Arthur Vale’s bold, elegant signature, dated three years prior.
"This is impossible," Adrian choked out, shaking his head frantically. "I dealt with a corporate broker named Montgomery! I never signed a loan agreement with you!"
"Montgomery works for my family's private trust, Adrian," Arthur replied smoothly, leaning forward and resting his knuckles on the polished table. "When you sought twenty million dollars to save your failing freight routes three years ago, no commercial bank in the country would touch you. Montgomery brought the file to my desk."
Celeste stepped up beside Adrian, her face pale beneath her heavy makeup, her sharp arrogance wavering for the first time.
"Adrian, tell him to stop playing games!" Celeste snapped, tugging hard on Adrian's tailored sleeve. "Show him the corporate charter! He can't just walk in here and claim ownership of your business!"
Arthur turned his piercing hazel gaze toward Celeste, studying her with the clinical disdain one might reserve for a common pest.
"Ah, Miss Monroe," Arthur murmured, pulling another thin file from his briefcase. "I'm glad you brought yourself to this meeting. It saves my process servers a trip across town."
He tossed a crisp white summons right onto Celeste's expensive designer purse.
"What is this?" she demanded, recoiling as if the paper were dipped in poison.
"That is a formal federal subpoena for civil conspiracy, grand larceny, and corporate embezzlement," Arthur stated calmly. "For the past fourteen months, Adrian has been funneling unauthorized corporate funds through your boutique consulting agency to purchase jewelry, overseas trips, and that six-thousand-dollar Birkin bag currently hanging from your arm."
Celeste gasped, her face draining of all color as she stared at the itemized bank transfers listed in the summons.
"Those were legitimate consulting fees!" she stammered, stepping backward toward the exit. "Adrian hired my marketing firm for promotional work!"
"Your marketing firm doesn't have an office, an employee roster, or a single client other than Vance Logistics," Arthur noted with razor-sharp precision. "It does, however, share a mailing address with a tanning salon registered under your sister's name."
Adrian lunged forward, grabbing the edge of the conference table to steady his shaking legs.
"Arthur, listen to me!" Adrian plead, his arrogant facade completely crumbling into desperation. "Evelyn and I... we just had a disagreement! You can't destroy my company over a domestic dispute! I'm the father of your grandsons!"
"You surrendered the right to call those boys your sons the second you threw divorce papers onto my daughter's hospital bed," Arthur whispered, his voice vibrating with absolute cold fury. "You humiliated her while she bled. You locked her out of her home while she held three newborns in the cold."
"I was under immense stress!" Adrian lied, sweat dripping down his temples, ruining his expensive haircut. "I wasn't thinking clearly! I'll take Evelyn back! We can go to counseling! I'll buy her a new estate, anything she wants!"
"Evelyn doesn't want you," a clear, powerful voice rang out from the double doors behind them.
Adrian and Celeste whipped around in unison.
Standing in the doorway, wearing an immaculate ivory business suit and diamond studs, was Evelyn.
Her hair was neatly pinned back, her posture was straight and unyielding, and her eyes burned with an icy confidence Adrian had never seen before.
Behind her stood two prominent attorneys from the city's most ruthless family law firm.
"Evelyn?" Adrian breathed, his jaw dropping open in utter disbelief. "How are you... you can barely walk!"
"Pain is temporary, Adrian," I said, walking slowly into the boardroom with measured, deliberate steps. "Betrayal, however, leaves permanent consequences."
I walked straight past Celeste, refusing to even acknowledge her existence, and stopped right beside my father.
He reached out and gently squeezed my hand, a silent nod of profound pride passing between us.
I looked down at the man I had spent five years serving, cooking for, and loving, only to be tossed aside like garbage the moment I became a mother.
"You told me I had no job, no money, and no legal fight," I said quietly, pulling a dark blue folder from my attorney's briefcase. "You told me to be realistic."
I threw the folder right onto Adrian's chest, watching it hit his designer tie before scattering across his polished shoes.

"What is this?" Adrian whispered, his eyes wide with sheer terror.
"That is an immediate motion for emergency sole custody, complete forfeiture of marital assets, and an immediate foreclosure notice on the estate you promised your mistress," I declared coldly. "Welcome to reality, Adrian."
