Chapter 5 - The Eviction at Sunset

By four o'clock that afternoon, the news of Adrian Vance's financial collapse had spread across the local business community like wildfire.

The city’s financial blogs were already running headlines about Apex Asset Management recalling twenty-two million dollars in defaulted corporate notes.

Adrian sat slumped in the passenger seat of his luxury sedan outside our former home, his head buried in his hands.

Celeste paced back and forth across the stone driveway, screaming into her mobile phone at her personal accountant.

"What do you mean all my accounts are frozen?" Celeste shrieked into the receiver. "It's my money! He gifted it to me!"

She kicked a decorative flower pot in pure frustration, shattering the terracotta into pieces across the paved driveway.

"Shut up, Celeste!" Adrian shouted, suddenly lifting his bloodshot eyes and glaring at her through the open car window. "Just shut up! Your greed and big mouth cost me everything today!"

"My greed?" Celeste scoffed, marching up to the car and pointing an accusing finger in his face. "You promised me this mansion! You promised me a private jet and an executive board seat! You lied to me, Adrian! You’re nothing but a broke loser hiding behind your wife's rich daddy!"

Before Adrian could fire back another vicious insult, the heavy iron security gates at the end of the long driveway groaned open.

A fleet of four black Cadillac Escalades rolled silently up the private road, followed closely by two marked county sheriff cruisers.

Adrian stumbled out of the car, his heart skipping three frantic beats against his ribcage.

The lead sheriff's vehicle came to a smooth stop, and Deputy Sheriff Miller stepped out, carrying an official eviction packet wrapped in official yellow tape.

"Adrian Vance? Celeste Monroe?" the deputy asked, his hand resting casually near his duty belt.

"Officer, what is this?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with humiliation. "I own this property! I filed the deed transfer yesterday!"

"The deed transfer was flagged and voided by the county recorder's office at noon today due to active lien encumbrance," the deputy stated plainly, thrusting the legal eviction notice into Adrian’s hands. "Apex Asset Management executed an emergency repossession order signed by Judge Harrison two hours ago."

Behind the deputies, the back door of the lead Escalade opened.

My mother, Eleanor Vale, stepped out onto the driveway.

She wore an elegant cashmere coat and carried a pair of heavy leather gardening gloves in her hands.

She looked around the manicured property, shaking her head in deep disappointment.

"You really did ruin the front hedges, Adrian," Eleanor said, her voice dripping with refined, upper-class disdain. "Evelyn planted those hydrangeas with her own hands when she was five months pregnant. You let them wither."

"Eleanor, please!" Adrian begged, running toward my mother with outstretched hands, only to be stopped instantly by two stone-faced private security guards. "Talk to Arthur! We're family! You can't kick me out on the street like a common criminal!"

"We were never family, Adrian," Eleanor replied, her eyes narrowing into cold slits. "You married my daughter thinking she was an easy mark. You thought you could isolate her from her parents, drain her trust fund, and replace her the second she gave you heirs."

Celeste stepped forward, trying to salvage whatever pride she had left.

"You can't touch my personal belongings inside that house!" Celeste yelled at my mother. "My designer clothes, my shoes, my jewelry—they’re mine!"

Deputy Miller turned to face Celeste, pulling out an official asset attachment order.

"Everything purchased with Vance Logistics corporate credit cards within the last eighteen months is currently subject to federal asset seizure, Miss Monroe," the deputy informed her firmly. "The movers are already inside categorizing every item. You are permitted to leave with the clothes on your back and your driver’s license."

Celeste gasped, her eyes bulging with absolute horror. "You can't do that! That's half a million dollars worth of merchandise!"

"Then I suggest you hire an excellent defense attorney," Eleanor remarked calmly, pulling out a small pair of silver shears from her pocket and snipping a dead rose bud off the front bush. "Because my husband's legal team has already forwarded your consulting invoices to the Internal Revenue Service."

Celeste turned on her high heels and stared at Adrian with pure, unadulterated venom.

"I hate you," Celeste spat, her voice trembling with rage. "You ruined my life!"

She turned and began walking down the long, half-mile driveway in her four-inch designer heels, sobbing hysterically into the evening air.

Adrian stood alone on the stone pavers, watching his mistress abandon him without looking back once.

He looked down at his wrinkled designer suit, then up at the towering mansion that no longer belonged to him.

"You have ten minutes to vacate the premises, Mr. Vance," the deputy announced coldly. "Or I will be forced to place you in holding for criminal trespass."

May you like

Adrian looked at my mother, his lips trembling, but Eleanor had already turned her back on him, walking back toward the comfort of her private vehicle.

For the first time in his pampered, arrogant life, Adrian Vance had nowhere left to run.
