Chapter 5 - The Bedroom of Shadows

The penthouse was warm and quiet, the storm outside now reduced to a gentle, steady patter against the high glass panes.

Dante led Serena through the vast, dimly lit corridor of the east wing—the wing she had inhabited alone for three long years.

The bedroom door stood open.

Dante stopped at the threshold, hesitating for a moment, looking into the room he had never dared to enter without a formal knock and an apology on his lips.

It was an exquisite, minimalist sanctuary decorated in soft tones of cream, dove-gray, and pale linen.

On the nightstand sat a single framed photograph: not of her parents, not of their grand society wedding, but a candid snapshot taken four years ago at a charity luncheon, showing Dante laughing as he adjusted the collar of a shelter dog.

Dante stared at the photograph, his chest tightening with an overwhelming, breathless ache.

“You kept this?” he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

Serena walked into the room, kicking off her low heels, letting her shoulders slump as the adrenaline of the night finally ebbed away.

“It was the only picture I had where you weren't wearing your armor,” she said, walking over to the window that looked out over the glowing city skyline. “The only picture where you looked like the man I wanted to know.”

Dante walked into the room, closing the door firmly behind him.

The click of the latch sounded enormous in the quiet suite.

For three years, that latch had been a symbol of rejection—a wall of silence that had kept him sleeping in the west wing, torturing himself with thoughts of his own inadequacies.

He approached her from behind, stopping inches away, feeling the radiant warmth of her body through the cool linen of her dress.

“When you locked this door on our wedding night,” Dante began softly, his hands hovering beside her waist, asking for permission without speaking, “what were you thinking?”

Serena turned around slowly, her back resting against the cool glass of the window, looking up at him with dark, vulnerable eyes.

“My mother had cornered me in the bridal suite twenty minutes before the ceremony,” Serena confessed, her voice thick with the memory of old pain. “She told me that if I allowed you to touch me, if I allowed myself to become a real wife, my father would consider the Cavali family fully integrated. And the moment the integration was complete, they had an explosive device scheduled for your private helicopter.”

Dante’s jaw tightened into iron, his eyes darkening with a fury that took several seconds to master.

“So you locked the door to keep me alive,” he breathed.

“I cried because I wanted to open it,” Serena whispered, tears spilling over her lashes once more, shining like diamonds in the soft lamp light. “I sat on that cold marble floor, listening to you tell me you wouldn't come in, and I wanted nothing more than to throw that lock open and bury myself in your arms.”

Dante didn't wait for another word.

May you like

He stepped forward, his arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her against his chest as his mouth came down over hers with a fierce, desperate hunger that had been denied for a thousand nights.

Serena let out a soft, choked cry against his lips, her arms tangling in his dark hair, pulling him closer, surrendering three years of terror, loneliness, and restraint in a single, breathless embrace.
