Chapter 10 - Where the Light Remains

That evening, the sunset over Lake Michigan painted the sky in magnificent layers of violet, rose, and molten amber.

The private terrace of the Cavali penthouse was warm, bathed in the fragrant evening breeze carrying the sweet scent of blooming jasmine from the terrace planters.

A small, beautifully restored mahogany piano sat in the corner of the open sunroom, its polished wood reflecting the fading twilight.

Serena sat on the cushioned cedar lounger, her feet propped up, sipping a glass of chilled raspberry tea, looking out over the glittering lights of the Chicago skyline.

Inside the nursery suite down the corridor, the walls had already been painted in warm shades of buttercup and cream, waiting for the arrival of their son in autumn.

Dante stepped out onto the terrace, carrying a soft cashmere throw blanket.

He draped the blanket gently over her legs, sitting down on the edge of the lounger beside her, leaning over to rest his palm flat against the curve of her belly.

As if feeling his touch, their unborn child gave a distinct, energetic kick against his palm.

Dante’s face broke into that breathtaking, boyish smile that Serena had fallen in love with four years ago.

“He has your timing, my love,” Dante murmured softly, his gray eyes shining with quiet, unshakeable wonder.

Serena laughed, a light, melodious sound that danced into the warm evening air, her fingers intertwining with his on her stomach.

“He has your stubbornness, Dante,” she teased gently, leaning her head against his broad shoulder. “He hasn't stopped kicking since the dock ceremony ended.”

Dante chuckled, wrapping his arm securely around her shoulders, pulling her against his chest as the first evening stars emerged in the clear indigo sky above the lake.

He looked down at his left hand, where his simple platinum wedding band caught the starlight.

Six months ago, he had sat in his study with an open divorce decree, believing that love was an impossible dream in a world ruled by blood and ledgers.

He had spent three years preparing to lose her, never realizing that she had been fighting every single day to keep him alive.

Now, sitting on the high terrace above the city they had reclaimed together, the shadows of the past were completely extinguished.

There were no more locked doors.

There were no more whispered threats in dark corridors, no more cold dinners Conducted in fearful silence, and no more debts owed to men who ruled through terror.

Dante brought her hand to his lips, kissing the sapphire ring on her finger with an agonizing, gentle tenderness.

“Thank you, Serena,” he whispered against her skin.

Serena lifted her head, looking into the eyes of the man who had torn up fifty million dollars just to stand beside her in the dark.

“For what, Dante?”

“For choosing me,” he answered softly.

Serena smiled, her fingers gently stroking his jawline, pulling his lips down to meet hers under the vast canopy of stars.

“I chose you three years ago, Dante,” she whispered against his lips. “And I will choose you for every morning we have left.”

Down below, the quiet rhythm of the lake washed against the stone piers, steady, peaceful, and clean.

The city hummed in the distance, vast and free beneath the summer night.

And on the high terrace above the water, surrounded by the boundless light of a love that had survived the fire, Dante and Serena Cavali were finally, completely whole.
