Chapter 6 - The Bitter Exposure

Olivia looked at him with gentle confusion, stepping toward him down the narrow hallway. ""Adrian, what are you talking about? It's the middle of the night. Come back to bed, you're shivering.""
""I know about Harrison Vance,"" Adrian said, every syllable feeling like broken glass in his throat. ""I know about the two hundred and forty thousand dollars. I know you liquidated your design studio to buy out the Aegis promissory note.""
Olivia froze mid-step, her eyes widening in sheer shock. Color drained from her face. ""How... how could you possibly know that? The transfer was completely confidential. Harrison promised me—""
""I know because I tracked the Delaware clearing accounts,"" Adrian confessed, stepping closer, tears streaming openly down his cheeks now. ""I know because Cole Development has executive clearance on those banking networks.""
Olivia blinked slowly, trying to process his words. ""Executive clearance? But... you said your accounts were frozen. You told me the banks seized your liquidity.""
Adrian closed his eyes, wishing the earth would open up and swallow him whole. ""My accounts aren't frozen, Olivia.""
A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the corridor.
""What did you just say?"" she asked, her voice dropping to a fragile whisper.
""Cole Development isn't collapsing,"" Adrian confessed, his voice barely audible. ""We just had the most profitable quarter in company history. The penthouse is fine. The cars are in the executive garage. The business was never in danger.""
Olivia stood completely motionless, staring at him as if he were speaking a foreign language. Her eyes darted across his face, searching for a punchline, searching for a rational explanation.
""I don't understand,"" she said, shaking her head slowly. ""Why would you tell me you were ruined? Why are we living here? Why did you make me cancel our wedding?""
""Because I was terrified,"" Adrian wept openly, reaching out to touch her arm, but she instinctively stepped back, avoiding his touch as if he were burning hot. ""Six years ago, Vanessa left me the moment things went wrong. She didn't love me, she loved the security! When our wedding got close, the panic took over. I wanted to be certain... I wanted to prove that you loved me for who I was, not for what I owned!""
Olivia stared at him. The confusion on her face slowly morphed into utter, catastrophic disbelief. And then, something far worse: complete emotional devastation.
""You... tested me?"" she whispered, the words trembling with horror.
""Olivia, please—""
""You fabricated a bankruptcy... to test me?""
""I was a coward!"" Adrian pleaded desperately, falling to his knees right there on the dirty hallway carpet, reaching for her hands. ""I realized it tonight! The second I saw what you did with the note, I realized what a monster I've been! You gave up your entire life's work for me! I will buy your studio back right now! I'll buy Aegis Holdings itself and tear it apart! I'll give you everything, Olivia, just please—""
""You sat at that kitchen table,"" Olivia said, her voice eerily calm, tears spilling over her eyelids like broken pearls. ""You ate the food I bought with the last few dollars in my checking account. You watched me cry over the wedding invitations. You watched me sign away five years of sleepless nights and hard work to build my business...""
""Olivia, I'm sorry! I'm so sorry!""
""...and the entire time, you were just sitting back, taking notes on my loyalty.""
She looked down at the diamond engagement ring on her left hand. Without shouting, without screaming, she slowly pulled the ring off her finger.
""Olivia, no! Don't do this!"" Adrian begged, reaching out blindly.
May you like
She let the ring drop. It landed on the carpet with a dull, sickening thud right in front of his knees.
""You were right, Adrian,"" she whispered with a heartbreak so profound it ripped through his chest. ""You really have lost everything.""
