Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

The law offices of Vance & Sterling occupied a discreet, mahogany-paneled suite in the heart of the Loop. Adrian waited across the street inside a small, nondescript coffee shop, his collar turned up against the autumn rain. He wore dark sunglasses, watching the revolving glass doors through the misted window.

At precisely one-fifty-five, a familiar figure appeared.

Olivia exited a rideshare vehicle wearing her muted cream trench coat. She held a thick manila folder securely beneath her arm. Her head was bowed against the wind, her shoulders slightly curved as if carrying an invisible, crushing weight. She walked through the revolving doors without glancing back.

Adrian immediately dialed the investigator he had placed on retainer. ""Marcus. She just went up. I need to know what’s signed in that room.""

""I’m already in the reception lobby, Mr. Cole,"" Marcus’s calm voice replied through the earpiece. ""I have a paralegal friend inside Vance’s division. Give me twenty minutes.""

Twenty minutes felt like an eternity of self-inflicted torment. Adrian paced the small tile floor of the café, ignoring the curious glances of the barista. Every memory of his past relationship came flooding back—how Vanessa had casually slipped her engagement ring into a velvet pouch, told him she 'refused to live below a certain standard,' and boarded a flight to Miami before the financial audits had even finished. Was Olivia just a far more calculated version of Vanessa? Had she merely smiled this morning to buy herself enough time to shield her assets?

His phone vibrated violently against his palm.

""Marcus. Talk to me.""

""Mr. Cole, your fiancée signed an irrevocable transfer agreement,"" Marcus stated flatly. ""Two hundred and forty thousand dollars transferred directly into a settlement liquidation fund.""

""Who is the recipient?"" Adrian's knuckles turned white around the phone.

""The recipient is registered as an offshore shell entity titled 'Aegis Holdings LLC.' But here is the strange part, Mr. Cole. The documentation included a formal non-disclosure addendum, and she surrendered the equity deeds to her boutique firm’s inventory as collateral.""

""She sold her design business?"" Adrian gasped, feeling the floor drop out from under him. ""To a holding company?""

""It looks like an emergency liquidation. She took a fifty percent haircut on the value just to get instant access to the escrow lines. She walked out of the conference room five minutes ago. She looked visibly upset, Mr. Cole. She was crying in the elevator.""

Adrian hung up, his mind spinning into sheer chaos. If Olivia was trying to save herself, why liquidate her own life's work at a massive loss? None of it made rational sense. If she wanted to run, she would simply hoard her cash and leave him in the dingy Lincoln Park flat. Why hand over every dime she had ever earned to a faceless shell corporation?

Determined to catch her in the act, Adrian sprinted out of the coffee shop into the freezing drizzle. He caught sight of Olivia standing at the corner of LaSalle and Adams, holding her phone to her ear, wiping tears from her cheeks with the back of her sleeve.

He slowed his pace, staying behind a cluster of commuters, creeping close enough to hear her voice over the dull roar of downtown traffic.

""...it’s done,"" Olivia was saying into her phone, her voice shaking with restrained emotion. ""I signed everything. The transfer clears at midnight. Please... just make sure Adrian never finds out. If he knows what I did, his pride will destroy him before the debt does.""
