Chapter 1 - The Calculated Deception

Adrian Cole looked at the glowing laptop screen resting on the scratched laminate table of the Lincoln Park apartment. On the display was an intimate wedding plan: thirty-two guests, a neighborhood church in Lincoln Park, and dinner at a family-owned Italian bistro where the total bill wouldn’t even cover the tip on one of his usual business dinners at Gibsons.

""You really want this?"" Adrian asked, his voice catching slightly in his throat.

Olivia looked at him over the steam rising from a chipped ceramic mug. ""I want to marry you, Adrian. I didn't fall in love with your luxury high-rise or the Cole Development logo on the skyline. If we have to rebuild from scratch, we do it together.""

A heavy knot of guilt tightened in Adrian’s chest. For a fleeting second, he almost cracked. He wanted to tell her that Cole Development Group had never been stronger, that forty stories above Wacker Drive his executive assistant was fielding multi-million-dollar bids, and that the bank accounts were bursting with liquid capital. But the ghost of Vanessa—his former fiancée who had packed her luggage within forty-eight hours of his first near-bankruptcy years ago—whispered cynically in the dark corners of his mind.

People could perform selflessness for a few days, Adrian reasoned bitterly. Anyone could play the supportive partner when the reality hadn’t yet completely set in.

""I need to meet with my accountant downtown,"" Adrian said, standing up and smoothing down the stiff cotton of a off-the-rack flannel shirt. ""Daniel thinks there might be a restructuring route, but it’s going to be brutal.""

""Go,"" Olivia urged softly, stepping into his space to wrap her arms around his waist. She smelled faintly of vanilla and linen, grounding him in a way no balance sheet ever had. ""Don't worry about me. I have some client meetings this afternoon, and I need to stop by the bank.""

""The bank?"" Adrian’s pulse spiked. ""Why?""

""Just sorting through my business overhead,"" she replied casually, reaching up to kiss his cheek. ""We’re going to be fine. Promise me you’ll eat lunch.""

Adrian nodded, but the moment the door clicked shut behind him, suspicion flared back to life like dry tinder. He pulled out a disposable prepaid burner phone and dialed Daniel Brooks.

""Did you check her accounts like I asked?"" Adrian demanded without greeting his partner.

On the other end of the line, Daniel groaned in exasperation. ""Adrian, stop this madness. You've already made her cancel her dream wedding and move you into a dive. Let the woman breathe.""

""Did you look or not, Daniel?""

""Fine,"" Daniel sighed heavily. ""Our private investigator ran a soft check through our banking contact this morning. Ms. Bennett initiated a total withdrawal protocol yesterday afternoon. Over two hundred and forty thousand dollars—virtually her entire personal life savings and the operating reserves of her design studio—was cleared out.""

Adrian froze on the damp sidewalk, cold wind whipping off Lake Michigan. ""Where did the money go?""

""A private escrow account handled by an independent corporate attorney named Harrison Vance. And according to Vance’s office calendar, Olivia has an appointment scheduled with him at two o'clock today.""

A sickening coldness settled over Adrian's ribs. Harrison Vance wasn't an ordinary lawyer; he was one of the premier debt-restructuring and offshore asset-protection attorneys in Chicago. Why would Olivia empty her accounts and funnel a quarter-million dollars into an escrow vault behind closed doors?

""She’s preparing an exit strategy,"" Adrian whispered grimly into the receiver. ""She’s liquidating her liquid capital before my supposed creditors can associate her with my debt.""

""You don't know that, Adrian!"" Daniel argued. ""Ask her directly!""

""No,"" Adrian replied, his eyes narrowing as he hailed a yellow cab. ""I’m going to Vance’s office. I’m going to see for myself what she’s willing to trade away when she thinks the ship is sinking.""
