Chapter 8 - The Aftermath

The days that followed were a whirlwind of sworn depositions, protective custody hearings, and media firestorms. Every major news network across the country ran the story: Billionaire Heir Arrested in Explosive Laundering and Domestic Abuse Scandal.

Derek’s high-priced legal team tried desperately to post his fifty-million-dollar bail, but thanks to the overwhelming evidence of flight risk and federal racketeering charges, the magistrate remanded him to the Metropolitan Correctional Center without bond.

Alabaster Holdings was seized by the federal government within forty-eight hours. The Russian syndicate leaders, realizing their pipeline was thoroughly compromised, vanished into Eastern Europe, cutting all ties and leaving Derek completely isolated.

By Friday afternoon, the noise had finally quieted down.

I sat in the boutique cafe owned by Bianca in River North, watching Nora devour a plate of artisanal strawberry waffles. Her laughter, pure and unburdened, was music I had feared I would never hear again.

""They dropped all the housing restrictions on campus,"" Nora beamed, her eyes sparkling. ""The university offered me a full academic scholarship for the rest of my nursing degree, Clara. They said an anonymous donor established a healthcare endowment in our mother’s name.""

I paused, coffee cup halfway to my lips. My heart skipped a beat. ""An anonymous donor?""

Bianca, wiping down the espresso machine behind the counter, caught my eye and offered a knowing, mischievous wink. ""Some men don't like saying 'you're welcome' out loud. They prefer sending wire transfers through offshore trusts.""

A soft, genuine smile spread across my face. Matteo had done it again—protecting my sister’s future without asking for credit, without demanding control.

""Are you going back to school too, Clara?"" Nora asked gently, reaching across the small marble table to squeeze my unbandaged hand.

""I don't know yet,"" I answered honestly. ""For the first time in my life, nobody is telling me what I have to be. I think... I think I just want to breathe for a little while.""

The cafe door chimed.

I looked up. Matteo stood in the doorway, dressed down for once in dark denim, leather jacket, and sunglasses. He pulled the glasses down, scanning the room until his eyes found mine.

""Go,"" Nora whispered, giggling behind her napkin. ""He looks like he came to kidnap you for lunch, and honestly, I approve.""

Flushing red, I stood up, kissed my sister's cheek, and walked over to the front entrance.

""Everything settled with the feds?"" Matteo asked as I stepped out into the crisp, sunny afternoon air.

""Every document signed. The restraining order is permanent, and Derek’s trial is set for next spring,"" I said, breathing in the fresh winter breeze. ""He's gone, Matteo. Truly gone.""

Matteo looked down at me, his gaze softer than I had ever seen it. ""Then let's take a walk, Clara. There's someone I want you to meet.""
