Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail

""He has everything encrypted,"" I explained two hours later, leaning over the wide monitors in Matteo's subterranean command center beneath the high-rise.

The room hummed with servers, glowing with blue light. Sitting beside me was Leo, a young tech operative with tattoos crawling up his neck, while Matteo stood behind us, watching the code cascade down the screens.

""Derek kept three separate hard drives in his safe behind the master bedroom closet,"" I told them, my memory sharper than it had been in months. ""He told me they were corporate hedge fund analytics. But every time his offshore partners wired funds, he made me leave the apartment for the entire day. He said the phone calls were 'sensitive.' Once, I caught a glimpse of an offshore shell corporation name: Alabaster Holdings.""

Leo’s fingers flew across the keyboard like lightning. ""Alabaster Holdings... registered in Nevis, routing through an LLC in Delaware. Let's see who's signing the wire authorizations.""

A series of red flags popped onto the center monitor.

""Bingo,"" Leo whispered, turning to Matteo with a predatory grin. ""It’s not just private equity. Derek’s using Alabaster Holdings to launder dirty capital for the Petrov syndicate out of Brooklyn. Russian money, Boss. Human trafficking transit fees disguised as luxury condo acquisitions across Illinois.""

The air in the room grew suffocatingly dense.

I turned to Matteo, my voice shaking with realization. ""He wasn't keeping me locked away just because he was jealous. He was keeping me locked away because I saw a ledger. Three months ago, I picked up a blue notebook off his desk to write a grocery list, and he hit me across the face so hard I hit the drywall. He spent the next three days weeping, telling me he lost control because of work stress.""

Matteo’s jaw clenched so hard I heard the enamel grind. His hands rested on the back of my chair, and for a fleeting moment, his fingers brushed against my shoulder—an anchor in a storm of horrifying truth.

""He hit you to protect his skin,"" Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. ""The Petrovs don't leave witnesses when their operations get compromised. If Derek had lost control of you, they would have butchered him in his sleep. He wasn't keeping you as a prisoner of passion, Clara. You were his human liability.""

""Then he won't stop,"" I murmured, staring at the cold lines of code. ""He can't afford to let me testify. Even if I run to another state, another country, he will hunt me until I'm dead.""

""He will try,"" Matteo conceded, pulling out a sleek black smartphone and handing it to me. ""Which is why we take away his money, his allies, and his freedom before he can make his next move. Call your sister.""

I looked at the phone, my heart leaping. ""Nora?""

May you like

""She has an encrypted line to this phone only. Talk to her. Let her hear your voice. While you do that, Leo and I are going to pay a visit to the Hale Trust's primary server vault.""

I held the device against my chest, tears stinging my eyes once more. For two agonizing years, every relationship in my life had been systematically pruned away until I existed only as an echo in an empty apartment. Now, step by step, this dangerous, enigmatic man was handing me back the scattered pieces of my soul.
