Chapter 5 - Whispers in the Dark

""Clara! Oh god, Clara, are you okay?"" Nora’s voice burst through the receiver, choked with sobs.

I sat on the edge of the guest bed, looking out over the twinkling city below, clutching the phone with both hands. ""I'm okay, baby. I'm safe. I swear to you, I'm safe.""

""These guys in black suits showed up at my dorm yesterday,"" Nora sniffled, her voice trembling. ""They knew my name, they had my favorite snacks, and they told me Derek was trying to grab me. Clara, they put me in this gorgeous house with a garden! A woman named Bianca is here with me right now. She made me hot chocolate. What is happening? Who are these people?""

""They're... friends,"" I said, catching my breath. ""Powerful friends. Derek won't touch you, Nora. Not ever again.""

""He came by my dorm two days ago, before they moved me,"" Nora confessed, her words sending a chill down my spine. ""He stood under the streetlamp outside my window, just watching. He texted me that you were sick and that I should convince you to come home before people got hurt. Clara, I was so scared.""

""He’s done intimidating us,"" I said, steel creeping into my voice. ""Listen to Bianca. Stay inside. We are ending this, Nora. I promise.""

After saying goodbye, I stepped out into the dark penthouse corridor. It was 3:00 AM. I couldn't sleep; adrenaline burned through my veins like kerosene.

I found Matteo on the sprawling private terrace, ignoring the biting winter wind. He wore only a heavy wool sweater and dark slacks, leaning over the stone balustrade with a lit cigarette resting between his knuckles. The embers glowed crimson against the Chicago night.

I wrapped my thick cardigan tighter around myself and stepped onto the snow-dusted terrace. ""You shouldn't smoke. It's bad for your health.""

A dry chuckle escaped his chest. ""In my line of work, Clara, tobacco is the least likely thing to kill me.""

I walked over, resting my forearms on the freezing stone beside him, gazing at the distant navy expanse of Lake Michigan. ""Why are you doing this? Bianca is your sister, yes, but you don't know me. I’m a stranger who invaded your bathroom wrapped in a towel, bringing a dangerous mess right to your doorstep.""

Matteo took a slow drag, exhaling smoke into the frosty night air. ""My father ruled this city with brute force. He took whatever he wanted, crushed anyone who stood in his path, and believed weakness was a crime punishable by death. When he died, I swore the Conti name would stand for order, not tyranny.""

He turned to face me. In the dim light of the city below, the hard edges of his features softened just enough to reveal the man beneath the kingpin.

""There are two kinds of predators in this world, Clara,"" he continued, his voice low and intimate. ""Those who prey on the weak to make themselves feel like gods, and those who hunt the monsters so innocent people can sleep at night. Derek Hale locked you in a room because he is small, cowardly, and terrified of his own shadow. I protect you because I can. And because nobody who seeks sanctuary under my roof will ever be dragged back to hell.""

I looked at him, truly looked at him—not as a terrifying mob boss, but as a guardian standing between me and the darkness. My hand moved on its own, resting over his on the cold stone. His skin was warm. He didn't pull away.

""Thank you, Matteo,"" I whispered.

His fingers slowly turned upward, intertwining with mine, holding tight against the winter chill. ""Get some sleep, Clara. Tomorrow, the hunt begins.""
