Chapter 8 - The Truth In The Rain

A torrential downpour battered the glass facade of Julian Vance’s private residence in Lake Forest.

Vivienne stood by the nursery window, watching little Leo sleep peacefully beneath his dinosaur-patterned blanket. Her heart was a storm of conflicting emotions. Earlier that evening, news had broken across every major television network: Sophia Carter Arrested in Shocking Murder Plot Against Late Moretti Heiress.

Julian stepped into the room, holding two mugs of hot tea. He handed one to her, standing quietly by her side.

""He found out,"" Julian said gently.

""I saw the news,"" Vivienne whispered, her fingers curling tightly around the warm ceramic mug. ""He destroyed the Carter family in less than twenty-four hours.""

""Vincent is outside, Anna,"" Julian said.

Vivienne froze. ""What?""

""He has been standing at the front gates for three hours in the pouring rain,"" Julian said, his expression completely neutral. ""My security asked if they should remove him. I told them to wait for your decision.""

Vivienne looked down at her sleeping son. For three years, anger had been her armor. The conviction that Vincent had betrayed her out of love for Sophia was the fuel that allowed her to rebuild her life from the ashes, to become 'Vivienne'—a woman who was untouchable, unbreakable, and cold. But now, learning that Vincent had also been a pawn in Sophia’s sickening game, the armor began to crack.

She set her mug down and walked out of the house.

The iron gates of the estate opened with a low groan. Outside, drenched to the skin, his dark hair plastered to his forehead and his expensive suit soaked with freezing mud, stood Vincent Moretti.

He didn't move toward her. He stood six feet away, his head bowed, shivering uncontrollably in the freezing rain.

""Anna,"" he choked out, raising his red, exhausted eyes to look at her.

""Why are you here, Vincent?"" she asked, her voice trembling slightly in the cold wind. ""Sophia is behind bars. The truth is out. You can go back to your empire and live your life.""

""I have no life without you,"" Vincent said, his voice raw, stripped of all pride, power, and ego. ""I didn't know, Anna. If I had known what she was planning, I would have killed her with my bare hands three years ago.""

""Ignorance doesn't excuse what you did on that plane,"" she said, though the venom in her voice was gone, replaced by a profound, aching sorrow. ""You still let go of my hand, Vincent. When the smoke was rising, you let go.""

""I know,"" Vincent whispered, falling to his knees right into the muddy pavement.

The most powerful man in Chicago, a titan who commanded billions, bowed his head into the wet gravel before the woman he had wronged.

""I know I let go,"" he wept, his shoulders shaking with uncontainable grief. ""And I will spend every single second of the rest of my miserable life hating myself for it. I am not here to demand custody, Anna. I ripped up the court petition. I dismissed all the injunctions against Vance’s shipping lines.""

He pulled a soaked manila envelope from inside his coat and placed it gently on the dry step beneath her porch roof.

""Everything I own—Moretti Enterprises, the real estate trusts, the family holdings—has been transferred into an irrevocable trust for Leo, with you as the sole trustee,"" Vincent sobbed. ""I don't expect you to take me back. I don't deserve your love. But please... don't let our son grow up thinking his father didn't want him. Tell him I loved him before he even took his first breath. Tell him I'm sorry.""

He stood up painfully, turned his back, and began walking away into the darkness and the pouring rain.
