Chapter 1 - The Ghost In The Ballroom

Vincent stood paralyzed amid the glittering crowd of the Palmer House Grand Ballroom, his heart hammering against his ribs like a caged beast. The crystal chandeliers overhead cast a brilliant shimmer across the sea of Chicago’s elite, yet the world around him went completely mute. All his focus narrowed onto the slender, poised woman standing beneath the gilded archway, sipping champagne as if she hadn’t burned to ashes thirty-six months ago.

Her hair was cut into a sleek, dark chin-length bob, far different from the long waves Anna used to wear, but the sharp line of her jaw and the haunting hazel of her eyes belonged to only one person. She was clad in an emerald backless evening gown that clung to her curves, radiating an effortless authority that Anna Bennett had never possessed during their marriage. Back then, Anna had been gentle, timid, always yielding to his demands, always walking quietly in his towering shadow.

""Mommy!""

The high-pitched squeal shattered Vincent’s stupor. A toddler no older than three bounded past a circle of laughing venture capitalists, his patent leather dress shoes slapping against the polished parquet floor. The little boy had an unruly mop of pitch-black curls and bright, inquisitive eyes that struck Vincent with a force heavier than physical violence. Those eyes were Vincent’s own reflection.

The boy threw his arms around the woman’s knees. She laughed, a rich, melodic sound that tore Vincent’s memory to shreds, and effortlessly scooped the toddler into her arms. She nuzzled the boy's cheek before whispering something into his ear that made him giggle.

""Anna..."" The name tore from Vincent’s throat in a choked rasp.

Beside him, Sophia frowned, her manicured fingers digging possessively into the sleeve of his tailored tuxedo jacket. ""Vincent? What is wrong with you? The Governor is waiting for us by the orchestra.""

Vincent didn't look at Sophia. He shook her arm off with enough force to make her stumble back in surprise. ""Let go of me.""

""Vincent!"" Sophia hissed, her voice lacing with indignation.

He didn't hear her. He parted the crowd with rough, unyielding strides, knocking a waiter’s tray and sending flutes of sparkling wine shattering across the floor. He didn't care. Nothing in the room existed except the ghost who had returned from the grave. For three agonizing years, Vincent had relived the blinding orange fireball that consumed his Gulfstream G650 every single night. He had poured millions into empty memorials, wept over an empty coffin, and choked down the bitter poison of his own guilt. He had broken his promise. He had left her behind.

""Anna!"" he roared as he broke through the inner circle of guests.

The woman turned around calmly. Up close, the resemblance wasn't just striking; it was absolute. Yet there was no fear in her expression, no pleading warmth, and none of the devotion that once defined her gaze. Her hazel eyes met his with the frigid detachment of a stranger staring at roadkill.

""May I help you, Mr. Moretti?"" she asked smoothly, adjusting the boy on her hip.

""It's you,"" Vincent whispered, his chest heaving, his fingers trembling as he reached out toward her cheek. ""My God, Anna... you're alive. You're alive, and our baby...""

Before his fingertips could brush her skin, a tall, broad-shouldered man in a bespoke tuxedo stepped smoothly between them, blocking Vincent’s hand with an iron grip around his wrist.

""I'd advise you to keep your hands to yourself, Mr. Moretti,"" the man said, his voice deep, cultured, and laced with quiet menace. It was Julian Vance—the reclusive shipping magnate and tech billionaire who had recently taken control of the Midwest’s logistics empire.

Vincent glared at Vance, his old territorial instincts flaring, but his eyes snapped back to the woman. ""Anna, tell him to step back. What is this? Why did you hide? Do you have any idea what I went through thinking you were dead?""

The woman tilted her head, a cold, mocking smile touching her painted lips. ""I think you have mistaken me for someone else, sir. My name is Vivienne Vance. And this is my husband, Julian, and our son, Leo. Now if you don't mind, you're frightening my child.""
