Chapter 7 - The Eviction Notice

Claire turned her back on Daniel, addressing the five hundred stunned guests directly. Her voice was warm, poised, and utterly untroubled.

""Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests, and family,"" Claire announced, her smile radiant and genuine. ""I apologize for the abrupt change in the afternoon's programming. There will be no wedding today. However, the champagne is poured, the catering is world-class, and the orchestra has been paid in full for the next six hours. Please make your way to the grand terrace. Today, we are not celebrating a marriage. We are celebrating the absolute triumph of truth over deception.""

The room remained silent for two breathless seconds. Then, an elderly gentleman in the front row—Arthur Vance, a legendary Chicago federal judge and a lifelong friend of Claire’s grandfather—stood up slowly. He began to clap, his applause echoing through the cavernous space. Within moments, the entire room rose to their feet in a thunderous standing ovation. Guests turned away from the altar, laughing and chatting in high spirits, completely abandoning Daniel Crawford to his humiliation as they headed toward the open bars and caviar stations.

Daniel stood frozen on the elevated platform, his groomsmen having already melted away into the crowd, desperate to avoid the toxic fallout of his ruined reputation. Trevor Hale had vanished through a side door without uttering a single word of support.

Two armed security guards stepped onto the altar, flanking Daniel.

""Mr. Crawford,"" the senior guard said firmly, displaying a laminated document. ""Per executive order of Bellweather Hospitality ownership, your access privileges have been revoked immediately. Your personal belongings have been removed from the presidential suite and deposited on the sidewalk at the rear loading dock. You have five minutes to exit the premises before you are arrested for criminal trespass.""

""You can't do this to me!"" Daniel yelled, his face turning an ugly shade of crimson as he looked around at the empty altar. ""I have reservations! I have credit cards on file!""

""All Crawford Development corporate cards were declined twenty minutes ago when the fraud freezing order was initiated,"" Rebecca Sloan interjected, holding up a legal notification on her tablet. ""Your personal credit limits are insufficient to cover the seventy-five-thousand-dollar incidentals incurred by your party last night. You are being escorted out.""

Between two imposing guards, Daniel was marched down the very aisle he had planned to walk in triumph. As he was led through the grand lobby, hotel guests and staff alike paused to watch the disgraced developer being escorted past the revolving brass doors. Outside, the midday rain had cleared, leaving the Chicago pavement wet and reflective.

The guards escorted Daniel out onto the curb. Waiting there on the concrete was his designer leather luggage, stacked unceremoniously beside two metal trash dumpsters. Across the street, Vanessa Cole was desperately hailing a yellow cab, her mascara running, completely ignoring Daniel’s frantic shouts as she sped away into the downtown traffic.

Daniel stood on the wet sidewalk in his tailored Tom Ford tuxedo, penniless, utterly disgraced, and completely alone.
