Chapter 6 - The Freefall of Daniel Crawford

Claire took a single step closer to him. The sheer authority radiating from her made Daniel instinctively shrink backward, nearly tripping over the hem of his own trousers.
""A joke?"" Claire’s voice was not raised, yet it carried with chilling resonance into every corner of the vast room. ""You were using my grandfather’s name to solicit thirty million dollars in mezzanine loans from the people sitting in these pews, Daniel. You were using Crawford Development to pay your mistress's rent while lecturing me on fiscal responsibility. You thought you were playing a game with a naive girl.""
""Claire, please,"" Daniel begged, tears of absolute panic welling in his eyes as he looked around at the grim, stone-faced executives in the front rows. ""Think about our families! Think about the scandal! We can handle this privately. We can sign an addendum to the agreement!""
""There is no agreement,"" a sharp, cultured voice rang out. Rebecca Sloan walked smoothly up the altar steps, carrying a sleek leather folder. ""As of eight o'clock this morning, the prenuptial protocol was formally nullified due to fraudulent inducement. Furthermore, Crawford Development has been formally referred to the Illinois Attorney General's Office for commercial wire fraud, tax evasion, and illegal misappropriation of corporate retainers.""
Daniel turned wildly toward Ethan Walsh, who was standing beside the grand piano. ""Walsh! You work for Bellweather! Tell them to clear this room! You work for the hotel!""
Ethan looked at Daniel with a mixture of pity and utter contempt.
""I do work for Bellweather Hospitality, Mr. Crawford,"" Ethan said clearly. ""And my primary responsibility is reporting directly to our majority owner and Chief Executive Officer.""
Daniel blinked, his jaw falling open in sheer, uncomprehending bewilderment. ""Majority owner? The Bennett trust sold those shares years ago...""
""My grandfather founded this hotel, Daniel,"" Claire interrupted, her voice cutting through his confusion like a scalpel. ""My mother built it into a nationwide brand. And on my thirtieth birthday, full voting control and sixty-eight percent equity ownership passed to me. I don't just hold 'some hotel interests,' as you so casually informed your friends last night. I own this building. I own the ground beneath your feet. I own the monitoring systems that recorded your betrayal. And I own the debt notes your father sold to private equity three years ago.""
The revelation detonated across the room like a seismic charge.
Daniel’s knees literally buckled. He grabbed the side of the wooden podium to keep from collapsing onto the polished floor. Every dismissive comment he had ever made, every arrogant lecture about the harsh realities of big business, every time he had patted her hand and told her to leave the finances to the men—it all rushed back to suffocate him.
He hadn't been toying with a sheep. He had been living under the roof of the lioness.

""You... you owned the whole thing?"" Daniel wheezed, his voice reduced to a dry rattle. ""All this time?""
""I wanted a partner who loved me for who I was, not what I possessed,"" Claire said, looking down at him with an expression of profound, liberating finality. ""My father warned me that men reveal their true nature when they believe you have nothing to offer them. You thought I was weak, so you showed me exactly who you are. And for that, Daniel... I truly thank you.""
