Chapter 4 - The Aisle of Reckoning

The organ music transitioned into the solemn, sweeping notes of an imperial processional. The double doors at the far end of the sanctuary parted once more. The room fell into reverent, breathless silence as the audience turned in unison to witness the bride.

Claire walked alone.

There was no father walking her down the aisle, no team of giggling bridesmaids holding a cascading train. She wore an ivory sheath dress that was stunning in its absolute, minimalist architectural perfection—no frills, no lace, no veil obscuring her face. Her blonde hair was swept back into a sleek, severe chignon. Her eyes were not the soft, dewy eyes of an emotional bride. They were two chips of cobalt steel, fixed entirely and unblinkingly upon Daniel Crawford.

Daniel felt a sudden, inexplicable coldness pierce the center of his chest. His practiced smile stiffened. Where was her father? Where was her bridal party? Why was she walking with the measured, terrifying cadence of a CEO entering an emergency shareholder meeting?

As Claire reached the foot of the altar stairs, she didn't offer Daniel her hand. She didn't look at the minister standing between them with an open leather-bound liturgy. Instead, she stopped precisely three feet away from Daniel, her posture immaculate, radiating an icy sovereignty that caused the front two rows of whispering guests to go entirely still.

""Claire?"" Daniel whispered, his voice trembling slightly beneath his forced charm. ""Where is your veil? What's going on?""

Claire did not answer him. She turned her head toward the control booth perched high in the ballroom's mezzanine. She raised her right hand, her index finger curling downward in a single, unmistakable command.

Above them, the massive motorized projection screen—typically reserved for corporate conventions and high-profile cinematic galas—began to hum as it descended slowly from the ceiling, blocking the stained-glass altar.

A confused murmur rippled through the five hundred guests. Trevor Hale shifted uncomfortably on his feet, whispering to the groomsman next to him. Daniel’s heart began to thud violently against his ribs like a trapped bird.

""Claire, what is this?"" Daniel hissed, leaning toward her, his voice dropping an octave into harsh reprimand. ""You're making a scene in front of the board members. Tell them to pull that screen up right now.""

Claire slowly turned her head back to face him. A faint, devastating smile touched her lips. ""You told your friends last night that I never cause a scene, Daniel. You said I was too sweet, too polite, too soft.""

Daniel’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen.

""Let’s see how well that opinion ages,"" she said.

The ballroom lights abruptly dimmed to pitch black. A sudden gasp echoed through the room. Then, the immense four-hundred-inch high-definition screen burst into blinding, vibrant color, accompanied by crystal-clear surround sound that echoed off every marble column in the sanctuary.
