Chapter 5 - The Grand Projection

The screen flickered, revealing the luxurious interior of the presidential lounge on the thirty-second floor of the Bellweather Grand. The timestamp in the corner read: 11:43 PM, Previous Night.
The audio boomed through the ballroom's multi-million-dollar acoustic array with terrifying fidelity.
""Claire’s great,"" Daniel’s voice rang out, heavy with alcohol and thick with smug disdain. ""She really is. Sweet. Polite. Never causes a scene.""
A collective shockwave traveled through the audience. Daniel’s mother gasped audibly from the second row, her hand flying to her throat. Daniel lunged forward toward the AV technician stationed at the side of the stage. ""Shut it off! Cut the power! Shut the damn thing off!""
Two towering security officers stepped directly into his path, their arms folded, their expressions immovable.
The video continued mercilessly. On screen, Trevor’s voice cracked through the speakers: ""That’s why you’re marrying her?""
And then, Daniel’s laughing face filled the screen, magnified twenty feet tall in pristine high definition: ""That and the Bennett name opens doors.""
The murmuring in the ballroom ceased entirely. It was replaced by a suffocating, horrifying vacuum. The city’s elite watched in appalled fascination as Daniel on screen chuckled about the prenuptial agreement: ""Oh, she thinks the prenup protects her. The funny part is she has no idea how much leverage I’ll have after tomorrow.""
Then came the visual confirmation of Vanessa Cole.
On the screen, Vanessa walked into the frame, her hand sliding intimately over Daniel’s back, her lips brushing his ear. The camera captured every nuance, every lingering stroke, every whispered, treacherous laugh.
""Vanessa gets Palm Beach after the honeymoon,"" Daniel’s voice echoed across the frozen ballroom, sounding like a death knell.
The video abruptly cut to black, only to be replaced instantly by a series of high-resolution digital documents. Scanned wire transfers. Corporate lease agreements for a luxury River North penthouse signed by Crawford Development for Vanessa Cole. Fraudulent vendor invoices attempting to bill the Bennett estate for personal luxury vacations and private jewelry purchases.
Vanessa, standing near the floral arch at the rear of the sanctuary, dropped her clipboard. Her face had drained to the color of chalk. Guests turned in their seats to stare at her with visceral disgust. She scrambled toward the exit doors, but found two female security personnel barring the way, holding open manila envelopes containing formal summonses.
The house lights slammed back on at full brightness.

Daniel stood center stage, stripped naked before every person whose respect, capital, and influence he had ever sought to manipulate. He was panting, his tuxedo suddenly looking like an ill-fitting costume, sweat breaking out across his forehead in heavy, gleaming beads.
""Claire..."" he choked out, his arrogance crumbling into a pitiful, stammering plea. ""Claire, listen to me... that was just locker room talk. We were drunk. The guys were winding me up... you know how Trevor gets... it didn't mean anything! It was a joke!""
