Chapter 9 - The Reckoning of Lila Summers

The downfall of Weston Capital was a tidal wave that dragged everyone in Andrew’s corrupt circle down into the depths. Lila Summers soon discovered that the spotlight she so desperately craved was a double-edged sword.
Three months after Andrew’s ruin, the Southern District of New York opened a comprehensive federal fraud and money laundering inquiry into Weston Capital’s shell corporations. Forensic accountants, working under the direction of Emma’s legal team, unearthed millions of dollars in illegal corporate expenditures—including three million dollars in wire transfers used to purchase luxury apartments, diamonds, and luxury vehicles directly for Lila Summers under the guise of ""consulting fees.""
One humid July afternoon, Lila was sitting at an outdoor café on Madison Avenue, trying to convince a minor talent agent to represent her for a low-tier reality television show.
Two men in dark suits and windbreakers bearing the yellow letters FBI approached the table.
""Lila Summers?"" the lead agent asked, showing his badge.
Lila rolled her eyes, scoffing. ""If this is about Andrew, I already told the press, I was just his girlfriend. I didn't know anything about his business.""
""We aren't here about Andrew Weston, Ms. Summers,"" the agent said coolly, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. ""We have a federal warrant for your arrest on twelve counts of receiving stolen property, tax fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Put your hands behind your back.""
The diners at the adjacent tables gasped, pulling out their phones to record the spectacle.
""Get your hands off me!"" Lila shrieked, struggling as the handcuffs clicked tightly around her manicured wrists. ""This is harassment! Do you know who I am? Drew bought those things for me! They were gifts!""
""Tell it to the grand jury,"" the agent replied, escorting her through the crowd of flashing cameras as she sobbed, mascara running down her cheeks in black streaks.
Within hours, the video of Lila Summers being loaded into the back of an NYPD cruiser in handcuffs went viral across every social media platform on the planet. The internet, which had watched her gloat on the ballroom floor as a cruel mistress, celebrated her public arrest with ruthless satisfaction.

As for Andrew, his fate was sealed in quiet ignominy. Unable to pay his creditors, disbarred from the financial sector for life, and facing personal bankruptcy, he was forced to surrender every luxury asset he had ever touched. He moved into a dilapidated, one-room basement apartment in upstate New York, working an hourly night shift at a regional logistics warehouse, his hands calloused, his back aching, and his name an industry punchline.
Every morning on his walk back to his dingy apartment, he passed newsstands displaying financial magazines. And almost every month, on the cover of Forbes or The Financial Times, was the radiant, untouchable face of Emma Vance—the woman who had owned the board while he was playing with toys.
