Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

By March of the following year, Andrew Weston was a shadow of his former self. His hair was streaked with gray, dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, and the tailored suits that once fit him like armor now hung loosely on his frame.

Weston Capital was officially insolvent. The private auction for the liquidation of the Hudson Yards assets and the majority controlling stock of Weston Capital Holdings was scheduled for 10:00 AM at the federal bankruptcy courthouse in lower Manhattan.

That morning in the penthouse, the atmosphere was toxic.

""Where is my allowance, Andrew?"" Lila shrieked, throwing an unpaid six-figure credit card statement onto the breakfast island. ""The concierge at the salon declined my card! Do you have any idea how humiliating that was? Victoria Davenport was sitting three chairs down!""

""Shut up, Lila!"" Andrew screamed, slamming his coffee mug down so hard the porcelain cracked. ""I am fighting for my life today! If the court auction goes south, we lose this penthouse by Friday! Go back to your mother’s apartment in Queens if you don't like it!""

Lila sneered, her red lips curling with pure venom. ""You pathetic loser. You told me you were a king. You’re nothing without your family name. If I had known you were running on borrowed cash, I would have never looked twice at your ugly, arrogant face!"" She snatched her Birkin bag from the counter and slammed the door behind her, leaving Andrew standing alone in the echo of his crumbling palace.

Two hours later, Andrew walked into the wood-paneled courtroom. The gallery was packed with reporters, rival hedge fund managers, and creditors smelling blood in the water. The bankruptcy judge took his seat, shuffling through the massive legal filings.

""We are here to resolve the Chapter 11 restructuring of Weston Capital Enterprises,"" the judge announced. ""The primary creditor, Aegis Sovereign Trust, has exercised its right of foreclosure and submitted a credit bid covering the entirety of the outstanding secured debt: nine hundred and forty million dollars. Under the terms of the master credit facility, this bid includes the assumption of all operational voting shares.""

Andrew leapt to his feet, leaning over the defense desk. ""Your Honor! This is an unconstitutional hostile takeover! We have the right to meet the principal of Aegis Sovereign! Who is buying my company? Who is behind this shell corporation?""

The heavy oak doors at the back of the courtroom swung open with a resounding thud.

The courtroom went dead silent. Every head turned.

Walking down the center aisle, her posture regal and uncompromising, was Emma Vance.

She wore a custom double-breasted midnight blue suit from Savile Row, her hair swept up in an elegant chignon, her face glowing with pristine, untouchable confidence. Behind her walked a phalanx of six senior corporate attorneys carrying thick black leather briefcases, flanked by Thomas Sterling.

Andrew froze. His jaw dropped. The breath was knocked completely out of his lungs. ""Emma...?"" he choked out, his voice squeaking like a frightened child’s. ""What... what are you doing here?""

Emma didn't spare him a glance. She walked directly to the podium reserved for the primary creditor, placed her hands lightly on the mahogany railing, and looked up at the judge.

""Good morning, Your Honor,"" Emma said, her voice clear, calm, and resonant through the cavernous courtroom. ""I am Emma Vance, sole director and principal trustee of Aegis Sovereign Holdings. We are prepared to pay the outstanding balance in full cash wire immediately. And we intend to assume full ownership of Weston Capital before the close of business today.""
