Chapter 7 - The Auction That Broke an Empire

The courtroom erupted into total pandemonium. Photographers pressed their lenses against the glass partitions, and reporters frantically typed bulletins into their smartphones. The flashbulbs were blinding, echoing the very night Andrew had kissed Lila under the chandelier—only this time, Andrew wasn't the victor. He was the carcass on the butcher’s block.

""Order! Order in this court!"" the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly against the wooden block until the murmurs subsided into tense, vibrating silence. The judge adjusted his spectacles, looking down at Emma with profound respect. ""Counsel, are the certified financial proofs of fund availability verified by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York?""

Thomas Sterling stepped forward, opening his leather portfolio. ""Verified at 8:00 AM this morning, Your Honor. The funds are held in escrow at J.P. Morgan Chase. The wire transfer requires only Ms. Vance’s biometric authorization.""

""Objection!"" Andrew screamed, stumbling out from behind his table like a drunkard. His tie was crooked, his face gray with shock and terror. ""She can't do this! That's my wife! That money belongs to the marital estate! Anything she owns is subject to equitable distribution under New York state law!""

Emma finally turned her head and looked directly into Andrew’s bloodshot eyes. Her gaze was not filled with rage. It was filled with nothing at all. Cold, absolute indifference—the ultimate punishment for a narcissist who thrived on attention.

Emma’s lead attorney stepped up to the microphone. ""Mr. Weston appears to be suffering from memory loss. On April 14th of last year, Ms. Vance served you with absolute divorce papers, accompanied by an explicit, irrevocable waiver of all spousal claims against your personal assets, contingent on your default. Furthermore, the assets of Aegis Sovereign Trust are derived entirely from the Vance Family Dynasty Trust—a pre-marital, generation-skipping bloodline vehicle established in 1984, immune to domestic claims. You signed that very prenuptial agreement yourself, Mr. Weston. You bragged to the press that you made her sign it to protect your wealth.""

The gallery burst into quiet, merciless snickers. Andrew’s own weapon had been turned around and driven straight through his chest.

The judge slammed his gavel down one final time. ""The credit bid by Aegis Sovereign Trust is accepted and finalized. The debtor's equity is extinguished. Ownership of Weston Capital, its subsidiaries, physical properties, and development contracts is hereby transferred to Aegis Sovereign. Bailiffs, clear the court.""

Andrew collapsed back into his leather chair, staring at the ceiling as if waiting for the sky to fall. Emma turned on her heel and walked out of the courtroom, surrounded by her security detail. As she passed his table, she didn't slow her pace.

""Emma, wait!"" Andrew gasped, scrambling to his feet and lunging toward her, only to be blocked by the towering frame of Thomas Sterling. ""Emma, please! We have a child! You can't do this to the father of your child!""

Emma paused just outside the double doors, turning slightly. ""My son has a mother, Andrew. And he has a name that will never be associated with cowards and frauds. You traded your son for a glass of champagne and a red dress. Live with the trade.""
