Chapter 26 - The Ballroom Burned Again

The first explosion knocked Emma against the wall.
Thomas grabbed her before she hit the floor.
Smoke flooded the underground archive.
“Secondary exit!” he shouted.
Marcus pointed toward a steel panel.
“There!”
Andrew reached it first.
Locked.
Liam worked at the electronic controls.
“No power.”
“Manual release?”
“Behind the server rack.”
Flames climbed cables along the ceiling.
Emma covered her mouth.
Thirty years of Mercer’s crimes were burning around them.
He would rather destroy his empire than lose control of it.
Thomas and Andrew dragged the server rack away from the wall.
Behind it sat an old mechanical lever.
Andrew pulled.
Nothing.
“Again!”
He used both hands.
The mechanism groaned.
The steel door opened six inches.
Thomas forced his fingers inside.
Together they pushed.
Fresh air rushed through.
They crawled into a narrow service tunnel seconds before the archive ceiling collapsed.
Emma was last.
Andrew turned back.
“Come on!”
A burning beam crashed between them.
“Emma!”
She dropped.
Heat scorched her back.
Then a hand reached through smoke.
Andrew.
For one second Emma saw another night.
Another version of him.
The husband who had once assumed she would always remain where he left her.
Now he was crawling through fire toward her.
“Take my hand!”
She did.
Andrew pulled.
Thomas grabbed her other arm.
Together they dragged her through.
They emerged into a hotel service corridor as firefighters rushed past.
Outside, television cameras already surrounded the building.
Emma sat on the curb breathing oxygen.
Andrew sat several feet away, coughing.
Their eyes met.
“Thank you,” Emma said.
He looked startled.
Then nodded.
“You’re welcome.”
Nothing else was needed.
Liam emerged carrying two damaged storage drives.
Thomas stared.
“You went back?”
“Technically I never fully left.”
Emma removed the oxygen mask.
“Please tell me you saved something.”
Liam held up the drives.
“Marcus had cloud synchronization.”
“How much?”
“Eighty-seven percent.”
Thomas laughed for the first time all day.
By evening investigators confirmed what Mercer had tried to destroy.
Bribes.
Extortion.
Corporate sabotage.
Illegal surveillance.
Conspiracy surrounding the Geneva bombing.
And communications tied to the Vermont attack and Irish kidnapping.
Gideon Mercer was now wanted in multiple jurisdictions.
But he disappeared.
Private aircraft records showed nothing.
Borders had alerts.
Ports were monitored.
No Gideon.
The next morning, Emma held a press conference.
She did not hide behind attorneys.
“The video released portraying me as confessing to illegal conduct was manipulated,” she said.
Independent forensic reports were distributed to reporters.
“Vance Global will cooperate fully with every investigation.”
A journalist shouted:
“Did you destroy Andrew Weston as revenge?”
Emma looked directly toward the cameras.
“No.”
She paused.
“Andrew Weston destroyed Andrew Weston.”
Across town, Andrew watched from a protected apartment.
Emma continued.
“I enforced contracts. I purchased debt. I protected my child and my company.”
Another reporter called:
“Do you regret what happened to him?”
Emma considered the question.
“I regret the years I believed silence kept peace.”
The quote went viral.
But instead of scandal, something shifted.
Women began sharing it.
Employees.
Divorced mothers.
People who had spent years minimizing themselves to keep families, jobs, or marriages stable.
Within hours:
SILENCE IS NOT PEACE
trended nationally.
Emma hated hashtags.
Moira loved this one.
Vance Global shares recovered almost every point lost after Mercer’s manipulated video.
That night Liam found Emma on the hotel balcony.
“You won.”
“No.”
“Most people would call today a victory.”
“Gideon is still missing.”
Liam stood beside her.
“So you won today.”
Emma looked toward the Manhattan skyline.
“Do you ever stop being reasonable?”
“No.”
“Annoying.”
“So I’ve been told.”
She smiled.
Then her phone rang.
Private number.
Emma answered.
Gideon Mercer whispered:
“You saved the company.”
May you like
Emma’s smile disappeared.
“But can you save your father?”
