Chapter 7 - The Calumet Trap

The sky over the Calumet River was the color of bruised steel as dusk fell over Chicago. The wind coming off Lake Michigan was razor-sharp, carrying the smell of rust, stagnant water, and rotting timber.
The abandoned grain silos rose into the twilight like decayed monuments of an industrial graveyard. Massive, hollow concrete cylinders towering over empty train tracks, broken glass, and tangled weeds.
I sat in the driver's seat of an unmarked black sedan, engine idling, my hands gripping the steering wheel. Beneath my heavy winter coat, I wasn't wearing silk. I wore black combat boots, dark jeans, and a kevlar vest strapped tight over my ribs. Hidden in my waistband was a compact Glock 19 that Luca had spent the last twenty-four hours teaching me how to draw, aim, and fire without hesitation.
“Smooth is fast, Mara,” his voice echoed in my head from our training in the underground range. “Don't look at his eyes. Look at his center mass. If he reaches for anything, don't wait for permission. Squeeze the trigger.”
In my pocket was a black USB drive. It looked like the real biometric key, but inside was a trojan virus programmed by Luca’s cyber technicians—designed to freeze Connor’s offshore accounts the second it was plugged into his terminal.
My burner phone buzzed. A text message from an unknown number: Walk inside Silo 4. Alone. Now.
I took a deep breath, whispered a prayer for Isla, and stepped out into the freezing wind.
The concrete interior of Silo 4 was massive, echoey, and bitterly cold. A single halogen construction light stood in the center, illuminating a folding table, a ruggedized laptop, and Connor Walsh.
He was leaning against the table, a leather jacket zipped to his throat, a satisfied grin plastered across his face. Two heavily armed mercenaries in tactical gear stood in the shadows behind him, assault rifles resting across their chests.
""Look at you,"" Connor mocked, clapping his hands slowly as I approached. ""From stripping on a greasy pole to playing mafia princess. You really moved up in the world, Mara.""
I stopped ten feet away, keeping my chin high, my coat unbuttoned just enough to reach my weapon. ""Shut up, Connor. I’m here for the transaction, not your pathetic small talk.""
Connor chuckled, shaking his head. ""Still got that temper. Where’s your Italian savior? Couldn't be bothered to come die for you?""
""Luca is busy managing his empire,"" I replied evenly. ""Something you’ll never understand. Here’s the drive.""
I pulled the black USB from my pocket and held it up. Connor’s blue eyes flared with naked greed. He snapped his fingers, and one of his mercenaries walked forward, snatching the drive from my fingers and handing it to Connor.
Connor plugged it into the laptop. The screen flashed blue, prompting for a biometric authentication. ""Come here, darling. Give daddy your thumbprint so I can catch my flight to Rio.""
I stepped up to the table, my heart beating in my throat. I pressed my right thumb against the optical scanner on the drive.
AUTHENTICATION ACCEPTED.
Connor’s grin widened as green lines of code cascaded across the screen. ""Forty-two million dollars. Clean. Untraceable. You were always so useful, Mara.""
""Now give me the passcodes to clear my name with the Commission,"" I demanded.
Connor looked up at me, his smile vanishing, replaced by a sneer of pure cruelty. He reached into his leather jacket, pulling out a silenced revolver and leveling it straight at my forehead.
""You really are naive, aren't you?"" Connor whispered. ""There are no passcodes, Mara. Dead women don't testify. And as for our bastard kid back in Lake Forest... once Luca’s empire falls, I’ll sell her off to the highest bidder in—""
He never finished the sentence.
A deafening crack echoed through the silo.
The high-powered sniper round punched clean through the mercenary on the left, spraying crimson across the concrete wall. Before the second mercenary could even raise his rifle, the rusted corrugated roof above us shattered into a million pieces.

Rappelling lines dropped like black serpents from the ceiling, and five men dressed in midnight-black tactical gear descended into the silo with terrifying, synchronized speed.
Leading them, assault rifle raised, his amber eyes blazing with demonic wrath, was Luca Ferrante.
